↓ six tips here ↓

Prep work is one of the most important steps in refinishing furniture. Sanding your piece in preparation for paint or stain can make or break your final finish. Keep reading for my best sanding tips, and SAVE this video so you can refer back to it later!

1️⃣ SANDPAPER GRIT

80 grit: sand through layers of paint or stain - never use on bare wood or veneer
120-180 grit: smooth your piece and prep it for paint or stain
220-320 grit: gentle sanding in between layers of primer or paint
400 grit: gentle sanding in between layers of topcoat

2️⃣ SAND THROUGH THE GRITS

If you start with 80 grit, always make sure to do another pass with 100 grit, and then again with 120 or 150 grit, and finish with 180 or 220 grit. This prevents sanding swirls! I also recommend sanding by HAND for your final pass.

3️⃣ SANDING PRESSURE

Don’t push down on your sanding tools. I know it seems like the process will go faster if you push harder on your sander, however this will lead to an uneven finish and sanding swirls. Keep your sander flat to the surface and always moving.

4️⃣ KNOW YOUR MATERIAL

I usually don’t recommend using sandpaper grit lower than 120 on veneer or laminate. Solid wood furniture is more durable, and would be able to withstand lower grit sandpaper, but be cautious!

5️⃣ WHEN TO STRIP

If your piece has a thick finish that needs to be removed, save yourself time and money by stripping your piece prior to sanding.

6️⃣ CHECK FOR SWIRLS

Spray some water or denatured alcohol on your piece before you apply your finish, this can help you find any sanding swirls that might be hard to see!

Note: you CAN use 40-80 on wood to smooth it oud. My stairs where like 80years old coverd in 1cm of glue. Removed the glue was a pain but the woods form the stair is licht and beautiful. Sanding the stair from 40-80 to smooth it oud and remove all the paint.
