He should have gotten the Academy Award for Best actor. This was an AMAZING role for him. He's brilliant and a LIVING LEGEND!

Damn it if I don’t shed a tear every time I see this scene. It’s a clever little plot twist. For the whole movie, Schmidt seems to see his letters to Ndugu as a sort of personal journal (this is evident in the unintentionally humorous way that he writes as if writing to an adult, not a six year old child). It’s not until he needs it the most, when he calls himself a failure and questions who in the world is better off because of him, that he gets his answer. I think that even though he had received a photo of Ndugu when he began sponsoring him, this is when it really hits home for Schmidt that his donations and especially his letters are not just a diary, they are providing some measure of happiness to a child in need.

One of the most moving endings to a film of all time. Jack Nicholson's performance, playing a character totally unlike himself, is authentic and remarkable.

Everything's in shades of grey and angular in shape. Love the aesthetics and acting.
