7 Most Expensive Pennies

Most pennies are worth one cent, but some are worth more than their weight in gold to coin collectors. Some small pieces of copper can be worth thousands of dollars. An important factor in determining the value of a penny is sometimes rarity. So, values for the world's rarest and most coveted pennies are well over $100,000. In this video, we will be going over the 7 most expensive pennies in the world.

7. 1914-S Lincoln Penny
The 1914-S Lincoln cent is not a particularly rare coin. After all, the San Francisco mint produced over 4 million of them. Despite being over 100 years old, this coin is in pristine condition despite being over 100 years old, making it extremely valuable. There is no noticeable bag mark on the coin's surface, and it has retained its original bright red-orange copper color.

6. 1944-D Lincoln Penny on a Zinc-Coated Steel Planchet
A 1944 Lincoln penny struck at the Denver Mint in Colorado is nothing special. Over 430 million of them were struck. However, because this coin was struck on a zinc-coated steel planchet adds to its rarity. These steel planchets were primarily used in 1943. Following numerous complaints, the United States Mint returned to regular copper planchets in 1944.

5. 1909-S V.D.B. Lincoln Penny
The Lincoln cent replaced the Indian Head penny in 1909. Victor David Brenner created the design under the supervision of President Theodore Roosevelt. Brenner added his initials, V.D.B, to the coin's reverse, between the two wheat stalks. Until now, coin designers had only used the first initial of their last name. It was unheard of for all three initials to appear on the design of a coin.

4. 1872 Indian Head Penny
An 1872 Indian Head penny is scarce, but it can be found in circulated condition at any coin show or coin dealer. There were slightly more than 4 million of them minted. However, due to financial hardships at the time (including the economic downturn that followed the "Panic of 1873"), few people were able to save coins for their collections. As a result, the majority of these pennies were circulated.

3. 1969-S Lincoln Penny–Doubled Die Obverse
This coin was discovered in 1970 and was featured on the front page of Coin World on July 8, 1970. Initially, the government thought these were counterfeit coins and confiscated them. Before they were recognized as genuine, five coins were seized and destroyed.
