Silat Suffian Seminar in Minnesota 2016

A successful 3 days Weekend Bruneian Martial Art - Silat Suffian Bela Diri Intensive seminar in MKG Minnesota between the 20th and 22nd May 2016.

Congratulations Master Peter Kwong for organising another successful event.

Thank you to Maser Rick Faye for having us in MKG.

Thank you to Brian J Pike and Adam Rector for your patience in assisting me in my demonstrations and presentations in the event.

Thank you to everyone that made the effort to support the event, those from Illinois, Georgia, Chicago, Maryland, Indiana, Wisconsin, South Dakota, and Mexico. You guys are awesome.

Thank you everyone, with your support and participation this event would not have happened.

My apologies if I miss anyone.

BRUNEIAN MARTIAL HERITAGE

This seminar like my other events aims primarily to raise the curiosity and awareness among people from different nationalities about the martial heritage and culture of Brunei Darussalam in general.

Ya know, I’ve always had this weird urge to learn martial arts, and I’ve always looked through and for some reason always came back to Silat. Turns out my dad practiced it throughout his whole life and was a champion for our whole country. Now I really want to learn Silat.

I'm Bruneian, i do believe silat is also one of the very powerful martial arts, other than silat, I also admired Chinese and Japanese martial arts, it doesn't matter which martial arts you're in, as long as we train hard, disciplined, be humble and improvise our attitude, s success is just ahead, peace! :D

Explained expertly. Using your body's natural armor i.e areas of thick muscle mass to take hits is extremely important. You don't want to get hit but you do want to be able to take it of you do. And no big muscles don't mean you're invincible. It's the structure and relaxation that's key. Love this. Great work

In The U.S. many call themselves Masters. Few are. I have been training in various arts for 36 years. Watching this man teach
I see the talent of a Master. Very good material, footwork esp.

Now this is real demonstration.. you can see the pain from these people’s faces. And you can see his understanding of the martial he is teaching from his explanations. He understands each moves purposes.

I love Guru Maul silat, so seamless and look effortless yet effective & deadly. When I was a child, it never came to my mind that Brunei has a quality silat. When I grow up and I learn that in the past Brunei Kingdom was way larger than its present size. And it makes sense that to conquer big land area you must have quality combat technique (and also other factors like strategy, strength etc). What Guru Maul possesses and shows is perhaps the reminiscence of the old glorious Brunei Kingdom. Much respect !

I love how the video just straight to the point show the movement and no introduction

Having trained Silat, I know first hand that it is effective and pragmatic. So may principles he talks about are key to all the arts, body structure, wholeness of body movements, effective range etc are all very real and a high level of experience. With this in mind I would like to point out that in reality there is only one moment. Your split second is shared with the other. If the opponent is anywhere near your level, you each get the same one split second. So then we don’t get four movements for the others one. I’m sure the teacher knows this, but observers will misinterpret the static demonstration. South east MA often have a 3 strikes in one time philosophy. But still the split second is just one.

The first time i knew it existed was yesterday, and I just felt nostalgic by the name .
SILAT, it reminded me of SALAT(muslim prayer), i just felt attached to it . Now, I am loving it more and more. Wish it was in my country.

Very nice stuff. This is real Silat. Techniques aimed at crippling and breaking. No competition stuff just pure self defence. 👊👍

I'm most impressed by how he seems to be aware at all times, where his opponents hands, feet, torso, and vulnerable points are, at all times. I don't most people understand and appreciate that these techniques may have been centuries in the discovery of Silat.

I find it fascinating how natural this looks for the master to do, yet it is so effective and agressive...

I hold a 5th degree Black in Hapkido and a 4th in Daito Ryu Aiki jujitsu And I was Fortunate enough to learn a few Silat techniques which in my opinion are far exceeding other Martial arts.
