Valve may have only just released its new Steam Deck hardware a little over a week ago, but it sounds like the gaming company is already in the process of working on the platform's second revision. Yes, the Steam Deck 2, for lack of a better name at the moment, is something that the head honcho at Valve has confirmed that the corporation is looking into. And while it remains to be seen how far in the future it will take for a Steam Deck successor to arrive, this idea in a general sense is something that Valve has seemingly always considered.

In a new conversation with Edge magazine, Valve boss Gabe Newell confirmed outright that it's looking into developing Steam Deck 2. Oh, yeah. Very much so," Newell said of the idea. He went on to explain that the main concern Valve had with the Steam Deck initially is that it would be too expensive. However, the platform's price point hasn't been an issue with consumers whatsoever thus far.

"We thought the entry price was going to be the critical factor [for Deck's success] but it turns out that far and away the most popular SKU is the most expensive one," Newell said. "That's an example of us being a little surprised by what our customers are telling us. They're basically saying, 'We would like an even more expensive version of this', in terms of horsepower capabilities or whatever. You know, that's why we always love to get something out there and ship it. Because we learn a lot from that, and it helps frame our thinking for Steam Deck 2."

So what could the Steam Deck 2 feature that the current model doesn't? Well, according to Newell, one thing that Valve is looking into is adding VR support to the platform. While this feature is something that the existing Steam Deck cannot carry out, Newell believes that a successor could allow users to tether their VR headsets to the device to play virtual reality games.

Probably not the first to say this, but Proton/Wine is not an emulator. W.I.N.E. actually stands for Wine Is Not an Emulator. It's a compatability layer that redirects or replaces Windows APIs rather than something like dos box which creates a container that the programs run inside of. Linux also makes us of dxvk to replace direct x calls with vulkan calls.

I pre-ordered my steam deck back in December, and I got the email yesterday. I'm so excited for AAA gaming on the go!

Pre-ordered my Deck in November, and got the email yesterday. Super excited :)

I wish people would give WINE more credit. It's the foundation Proton is built on and while Valve cleaned up a lot of the gaming related stuff it's still WINE code dealing with the rest of the quirky Windows APIs.

Enjoying the living hell out of my steam deck. I got it Wednesday after pre-ordering it last September and I can say it’s so worth it!

I have had my steam deck for a week now and have loved everything about it so far. I wanted to make videos with it but have been to busy just playing with it. I will be trying to upload soon.

You pretty much covered most of what I wish for on a Steam Deck 2. 👍🏼 Hope Valve already has these in mind. Better battery life and OLED would be my top request. Would like the top corners to be rounded a bit more too for a more comfortable L/R buttons.

I ordered my Steam Deck last October and got the email/alert yesterday. Was awesome to finally see and can't wait myself to start enjoying it with this channel once it arrives within the next 10 days.

Steam Deck 2 should keep overall form factor with minor tweaks/hardware upgrades. Drop in a borderless 8" OLED screen. Increase battery life to 7-10 hours. Add an extra usb c port. Done.

I have some minor things I'd like for the next gen Deck, but it's mostly fairly minor adjustments. I'd love a lanyard attachment point (a wrist strap would give me so much peace of mind when gaming in public), definitely smaller display bezels, the joysticks with better longevity... But honestly they're all relatively minor adjustments, I think they've done a really great job with the device overall. I've got the base model with a microSD and it's just ridiculously great value.

I also really hope they wait a good couple of years for gen 2. If it's launched too close to gen 1 it'll most likely not sell as well, especially since the original is so repairable. It's not a disposable piece of tech, and I'd hate to see Valve start that kind of launch pattern. Better to leave the launch for when there's a significant upgrade (chip, battery technology, all of that) and make it really worth it.

I reserved mine in July of last year and just got mine 3 weeks ago. 512 variant. it has become the most expensive dedicated emulator I have ever purchased. I am constantly learning new things about it and am trying to dig deeper into the possibilities of the hardware. I love it

9:59 I agree with the joysticks. While I've been generally very happy with mine and haven't had any issues, I've had once or twice on my Deck already where I kinda feel a little bit of rubbing (very little, but I noticed it), and my Deck has been kept extremely clean so there shouldn't be any dust inside the joysticks, so that tells me that I'm occasionally just feeling the literal contact between the components inside the joystick mechanism, which makes me worry about the longevity of the joysticks.

As someone who absolutely fell in love with the Steam Deck despite having used everything from anbernics/GPDs to Neos, I'm all in on Steam Deck 2 and would jump on it in a heartbeat even though I already have a Steam Deck OG. Overall, I'd be happy just with a bit more power and battery, any standard size reduction as is normal and technology allows though atm it really isn't a problem for me, and of course OLED as an option on the higher end model so it can still be a choice.

I think Steam Deck 2 is going to be the real clincher here as now Valve is completely sure it'll succeed, developers already have a base to work from and support while Valve also has the OG Deck to build from in terms of features and potential issies (which they are already addressing quickly!).

This means the "Steam Deck 2" is going to be in a REALLY good position.

8:14 I was shook when I fired up Spyro: Reignited Trilogy on my Steam Deck and saw how much crisper the image was on Deck than on my Switch. It tells me the Switch is not running at 720p, probably something lower and just being anti-aliased and dithered to death. Either way, even at the size of the Deck screen, 800p is perfectly fine for me. Higher resolutions would offer minimal benefit but would measurably hurt battery life.

would be nice to see a user replacable battery for the SteamDeck 2. Just like old smart phones use too.

For the Deckard, inside out tracking is a must. It's too much of a hassle to deal with setting up light houses at the homes of friends and family. I love my Quest 2 but I'd love to have the same freedom that I get in regards the operating system as well as the hardware just being another PC that can be upgraded or just used as an IO device.

What I would love for valve to do is whenever they make a steam deck too is make the motherboard the same footprint to where you can do an in place drop in upgrade

I would love to see a removable battery for longevity of life of the unit over all.
