【Pls look at the top comment first】I make this video in order to review this underrated memorable masterpiece by such a music talent, Jeff Cannata and his project Arc Angel. A magic video clip match this magic song from this magic album. This album can be considered as a monument of aor. Released in 1983, this is the first official album of Jeff Cannata, who should be remembered by melodic rock world and aor fans. Fronted by such a talented singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist, Arc Angel is a dedicated project, featuring Cannata as an all-around role in the albums.
For those who know Arc Angel for the first time, this band was formed by Jeff Cannata and Michael Soldan, both of who previously played in the popular Connecticut-based band Jasper Wrath during 1970s. After Jasper Wrath's demise in 1976, Cannata and Soldan continued writing songs together and taking on various musical roles. In early 1980s, they presented some of their new compositions to the staff at CBS Records and won warm response by CBS, which promoted a record contract as a new page in their music career.
Behind Arc Angel, there are two talents. During recording process, Jeff Cannata played lead vocals, guitars, bass and drums while Michael Soldan played keyboards and backing vocals. In order to promote the level and enrich the arrangements, they decided to work together with a large group of session musicians to accomplish recording, including more backing vocals, rhythm and lead guitars, acoustic guitars, bass, pianos, synthesizers and Oberheim.
Unfortunately, after the release of this self-titled debut in 1983, they didn't win as a good result as they had expected, maybe because of similitude to some old school aor during those periods of vinyl time, especially those stuffs coming out before 1985, or maybe because of the lack of cognitive interests from listeners, or even because of some other market environmental reasons, which caused Jeff Cannata to quit the project name "Arc Angel" at that time and start to record solo albums under his own name. However, historical judgements seem to be wrong. Nowadays, this album is an absolutely terrific masterpiece to be cherished for good and such a talented music genius should never be forgotten because more potential fans on new generation and those loyal fans who have followed Cannata for decades always support and wait for his creations. It has proved that this project name "Arc Angel" has been back since 21 century with two artistic records : "Tamorok (2002)" and "Harlequins of Light (2013)", which is a long-awited come-back record on Frontiers.
Among all the works from Jeff Cannata, this debut is filled with nostalgic aor tunes, very close to old school pomp style coming out during late 1970s and early 1980s. Lots of hi-tech elements were added to the music arrangements in this extraordinary song "Sidelines" as an example, truly blessing for ears and standing out to hit heart. Splendid sound effects by synthesizer can be heard penetrating the intro & the outro, which is the notable music feature from Cannata's early inspiration. Among the line-up from these session musicians, the role of Oberheim is worth noting. This is a classic type of synthesizer, by which musicians can set very nostalgic and remarkable sounds in specific music.
Apart from this impressive track, don't miss these marvelous tracks like "Tragety"(with a music video for promotion), "Wanted : Dead Or Alive"(to feel charm of keys), "Used to Think I'd Never Fall in Love"(amazing ballad), "Rock Me Tonight"(a real hard rock gem) and "Confession"(pleasing mind-tempo aor). Why this is considered as one of the monuments of aor? The answer is kept in mind. Lots of old school pomp aor sounds are the pioneers of this great genre. Cannata added more melodic prog elements to his following albums of Arc Angel, but this debut is always an epic must for aor fans, especially the song like this with certain technological content. Personally, this debut is what I would like to recommend most among all the works from Arc Angel to look back the past year before I was born.
Finally, hear the laser. I mean laser can be seen, also can be heard in this song because sensory organs are related to each other.
