John came up with this lower harmony because the original high harmony (you can actually hear him singing it in an early demo of If I Fell) was too high for him to sing comfortably. But in fact this harmony is what, in my opinion at least, gives If I Fell it's haunting quality. With only Paul's line, it sounds like a happy song, with only John's, it sounds very sad. Put them together and you get a beautifully conflicted sentiment which is exactly what we see in the lyrics too.

I can't imagine how difficult it was to sing this harmony line. I've tried and always fail, always end up following the lead vocal. Also seems unusual that John would be essentially singing back-up on his own composition, while Paul sang lead. These guys were just naturally blessed talents.

Pitching is on point

And for everyone saying it sounds weird...this is a harmony line it's not meant to be heard on its own, just for our curiousity

I wish someone would do isolations of George’s harmonies on Beatles songs cuz I find them to be the hardest to hear and follow. I can pick out John’s and Paul’s pretty easily.

I’ve always thought this song was among the Beatles most beautiful harmonies. It’s really very simple when you break it down, but Lennon singing a low harmony to McCartneys high melody is pure genius in its effect. This song is one of the reasons, that for me, the early Beatles is the best Beatles.

When I found out how to do John's vocal in this song, now everytime I sing this song I always do his part

Absolutely brilliant low harmony. One must be extremely mentally focused to sing it while someone else is simultaneously singing the higher lead harmony. Just brilliant.

Just what I've been looking for on YouTube. Now I can more easily memorize John's parts. I can never get enough of hearing John's harmonies below the melody line.

It's so much more nuanced than I imagined.

To this day, this is on my top 5 Beatles song list. And from the very first time I heard it, I was captivated by its simplicity but also its complexity. What was it about this one Beatles song that was so different? The melody that most everyone knows is Paul's vocal. But after listening to John's isolated vocal, I now know why "If I Fell" has been with me for 60 years. Amazing...

This is the most complicated blending I have ever heard and yet the most beautiful as well. John and Paul is just in a different level.

You should isolate the harmonys of Because
like Johns vocals on Because, Paul, And George

One of my favorite of theirs. One of the songs I loved to play on my guitar as a kid back in the eighties. One of the songs that taught me how to listen to and sing harmony. "This Boy" was too complex for me to really nail all of but "If I Fell" was sophisticated yet still transparent enough to learn. Such beautiful chords.

This is fantastic! And, it proves that these young men were so much better than any musical group before them (and since!).

This is one of the Beatles most amazing songs. The chord structure is genius and pretty weird. It's open with Bflat minor to D to Dflat. When you play those chords in isolation they sound a bit odd but when you the into melody over them it's magic.

It’s fun to listen to this studio stuff but no matter how weird it sounds, we all know it worked because the finished song is wonderful and they sounded beautiful in their live performances. It’s a beautiful thing these Beatles, I will always love their gift to us.

I tried to sing Paul's part along with this but it made me cry because of the sheer beauty and genius of these harmonies
