What is Liquid Crystal Physics? Smart Materials, Lasers, Kevlar, LCDs and More!

Here we take another Tour Through Physics and introduce a field of physics that doesn't maybe get the exposure it deserves. This time: Liquid-Crystal Physics

For an excellent, more detailed video on LCDs specifically see The Engineering Guy:

Note on laser pumping:

Semiconductor lasers, like those in your CD/DVD/Blu-ray player are electrically pumped meaning the gain medium is kept excited by an electrical current. However, it is far more common for laser to require optical pumping with an external light source exciting the medium. In the ideal case on can use something like a flash lamp, however, often one may need to actually use another "seed" laser to pump a second laser. Obviously this isn't ideal but it's still worth it if the final laser has superior properties to the seed laser.

Wow
Just wow
This is some seriously rare and genuinely amazing content
I'm like really really surprised that this channel is so underrated, including your delivery skills
I think you should get some good sponsers and this channel will boost up in a with superluminal speed
Please keep making these excellent videos on such rare topics
Thank you. I really appreciate your work

Very good and informative video! I really appreciate someone, who can talk about physics without popular topics like string theory, cosmology or Einstein's theory of gravity.

You're such a great channel.
Finally a Physics channel that doesn't just show all these "Mainstream" Physics topic's on YouTube but talks about other interesting topic's in Physics.
Physics ain't all about Schrödinger's Cat and Quantum tunneling and you're the only one that finally got it.

10:24 I'm not sure if it it's smart glass, but the windows on a 787 have a dynamic opacity that can be changed by button instead of a shade like other airliners, which I thought was cool, but I didn't like the blue tint

Good info! Thank you. Isn’t the polarizing film a type of liquid crystal as well?

Hey! Thank you very much for the clear introduction to liquid crystals. I'm currently doing a literature review about smart windows and I'm still a bit confused about the liquid crystal droplets inside the polymer/glass matrix. Do the liquid crystal molecules inside the droplets orientate under electrical field by themselves or does the dropplet as a whole orientate because of the crystal-like structure? And are the liquid crystals usually chiral or nematic in the glazing?

Add 3d printers to your list of LCD devices...

I gotta say it's a crime that your videos aren't more popular - there are plenty of science and technology channels with hundreds of times your subscribers and views, whose content is frankly crap in comparison. I can't think of anyone I've found on YouTube who explains things better than you. Hope it's not discouraging.

Wow looks like someone is doing what theranos failed at.
