It's honestly insane that this random ghost-town throwaway area is literally half of a region and we need to talk about it more lol

There is a theory that they are going to destroy it in the future for plot reasons and that's why it's so empty. Khaenriah is underneath sumeru, so maybe it's going to get destroyed in three years or so to reveal the entrance to khaenriah.

I was honestly disappointed they didn't save that area for a rain forest expansion for Sumeru, an area the size of Chenyu Vale would've fit perfectly even leaving enough space between it and Fontaine.

Petrichor and the sunken castle could've been easily put on the other side of the harbor, north of the desert.

I don’t mind no chest, I mind when there isn’t plants to grab or enemies to fight

Same thing happened when the chasm was released, it took them some time to add some chests in the area that was added to unite lyiue and chasm

I was a bit disappointed but it genuinely doesn't bother me. Considering how massive Sumeru already is, it really didn't need more stuff. Besides, we got Petrichor, the Faded Castle and the Sea of Bygone Eras which is the main attraction.

The lore points to this being intentional. The door to khaenriah in the sumeru desert points directly toward bayda harbor. considering its empty it’s the perfect location for them to do story related map events there without affecting existing chests yet allowing for crazy map transitions

it’s only so the new area doesn’t mess with the exploration of og sumeru
like you can’t exactly take back any rewards for high sumeru

The reason there are not many new chests or items is that it would mess with the 100% requirements for each region. Historically, Genshin had not added content to an area that would mess with the 100% requirement of the area.

1. It would not mess with Sumeru exploration % because to get 100% in any region you don't actually have to get everything in it. Also, if it was really a concern, they would not have added the chasm or Chenyu Vale to Liyue after Liyue had already been out since the beginning of the game.
2. There is no reason to add a random port and nothing else, not even a few puzzles, chests or a quest. Hell, even just add some monsters.
3. Normally they fill in the gaps anyway. There's no ghost town area from the transition from Liyue to Sumeru, for example.
4. If they really were concerned about taking attention away from the Sea of Bygone Eras, there's no reason they couldn't have just come out with this Sumeru part earlier. There was literally no reason not to have just had it come out with everything else and just spread the chests out a little more... all that surrounded it was water anyway, it wouldn't have given us any clues as to what was there.
5. When we got the Chasm and Enkanomiya, they came with a ripe overworld as well as their alternative maps (granted, Watatsumi was out before Enka). Considering how small Petrichor is, there was no reason not to fill Sumeru out a little more, especially when it's land equivalent to half of Mondstadt.

I normally think people are dramatic when they talk about how Hoyo should do better, but I think its waranted in this case. They gave a good alternative map, but the overworld feels rushed and botched.

It's basically the finished version of an unused map part, instead of they just blacking it out, lelz

i think they just don't want it be blank since they are going to use the area later on.
