Natlan boycotters are upset because the 5.0 live stream didn't address their concerns about the lack of diversity among Natlan's characters. They expected changes, but Hoyoverse didn't make any. During the orchestra session showcasing Natlan's theme, they noted that the orchestra had more diversity than the game's characters, arguing that the characters should reflect this diversity if it's the main inspiration for Natlan.

I find that the diversity in the orchestra itself was far better than having fictional diversity. They hired real POC to represent their culture in their music. That's far better than having fictional characters having dark skin because REAL PEOPLE from said culture get to show what their culture is about rather than being skin-tone deep. Culture is not about skin tone, it's about their way of life!

Honestly as an East African I don't even mind the lack of skin tones whatsoever, the fact that they actually stuck through with the culture and language through the orchestra and Natlan as a region itself is fine for me, representation doesn't have to be through skin color alone.

I didn’t expect anything to change, honestly. I’d love for playable characters to reflect the people that Natlan is inspired by, but I don’t think it’ll happen. The orchestra was lovely though and I’m glad it was diverse.

It's almost like NA and EU players don't understand that CN players will legitimately skip/boycott/berate Hoyo about darker skinned characters, which is why we primarily only get pasty white characters. People need to take a peek at how the CN playerbase reacts to things Hoyo does and learn why they /don't/ do certain things. You have to bend to what your primary consumers want, and the CN playerbase is the primary consumer here. Look at the situation with Wanderer/Nahida for example.

I would like darker skinner characters in the game, but I feel like people don’t realize skin tone isn’t the only way to represent a place. The music, the designs, the culture all are pretty perfectly represented so far!
