Night arrival in Morocco. Did we make a mistake?

The only flight available from Lisbon to Morocco departed at 6 pm had a 2 hour layover in Casablanca and arrived in Fez at midnight, so not exactly ideal timing when traveling with children but it is what it is and we can be flexible.

The flight itself was an adventure! It’s been a while since Laurin and I flew on a turbo prop plane (aka puddle jumper) and a first time for the boys. We were definitely anxious (after an awkward encounter with the customs agents - can see details in our Stories and Highlights tab) and the excessive turbulence didn’t help, but we thankfully made it safely.

After making it through customs in Fez we stopped to get some cash (Moroccan Dirham). Good thing we did because most places in Fez are cash only. We felt relieved when we saw our driver patiently waiting for us!

By this time it was nearly 1 am and we still had a half hour drive to the ancient medina. Our driver was very nice and even found a place for us to stop and get bottled water & snacks for the boys.

We arrived at the entrance to the Medina. We were mesmerized by the high city walls and the brightly lit mosque tower. We had arranged ahead of time through our amazing host, Emma, a “chariot” to help carry our luggage down the confusing, winding walkways of the Medina. Our hearts were pumping as we took in all the unfamiliar sights and sounds.

Several twists and turns later and close to 2 am we were led to a narrow path that went to a wooden door and inside was a beautiful traditional Riad home. We were tired, but we made it safely!

We learned that a little bit of preparation before arrival helps tremendously in stressful odd timing situations.
