I was wondering why Monsters' University was so different in outlook to Monsters Inc. what with the bright colours and no moral conflict and it certainly didn't feel as genuine or interesting.

I think the first inconsistency could be explained by the way that monster inc is propagandized by the society they live in.

I mean, scares are their main source of energy so they would need an infux of interest in that job so people would want to work there.

Just saw this and I must admit this is one of the móst & best interesting theories I saw on Monsters Inc.! There is a reason why Monsters Inc. is one of my absolute favorite movies. There were many references I liked about MI (Monstropolis-Metropolis, the energy thing, corruption in companies, fear mongering etc. etc..). Honestly, I believe this theory must be true. The movie "Monster universe" felt so unrealistic because as you mentioned of it's non existing continuity
to the original movie from 2001.I don't believe they did those mistakes (who weren't so few) accidentally. It really feels like some propaganda for Monsters Inc.!
