As a liberal arts and sciences university, the College produces well rounded individuals educated in diverse disciplines and their interrelationships through strong and broad common general education requirements. It also promotes intellectual inquiry and values learning for its own sake, and teaches students to learn, adapt, think and communicate by studying the intellectual and artistic achievements of humankind.

While at the College of Charleston in October 2012 for a Friends of the Library event, Author Jon Meacham talked about the value of a liberal arts degree in today's global society.
