@ijustine The new mKeynote plugin is awesome, I’m using it all over the place in this video! And sorry Wheel of Time fans - no hard feelings hopefully :).

That last point is really important. I was working for a Silicon Valley company in a satellite office in another state. I was strongly debating about moving there, until I made a few visits to the main office.

The scenery is beautiful and the pay is great, but the cost of living is extremely high and coworkers had a really sobering response when asked what they did for fun. Just about everyone spent their free time working.

From then on work-life balance has been one of my biggest factors in a potential new job. The only way I'd sacrifice my personal time is if I was personally invested in a business. No need to take on the extra stress just to make someone else rich.

Very nice! 1) you should *definitely* make a video on salary negotiations (especially techniques that can be applied in big tech companies) and 2) another book you should have added to the list is "Getting Things Done" by David Allen

Does anyone use Kindles to kindle fires? In English the word "kindle" is a verb. Related noun is "kindling" - meaning small dry material, typically wood, used when starting a fire.

I spent my 50 dollars Amazon gift card in this collection. Thank you very much Arjan. Big fan of you and your work!

Congrats Arjan! You truly deserve this audience!

I have read most of these books and still found it fascinating to listen to your analysis. Likewise, I have the same feeling towards working in big tech companies somewhere away from my family, unless it is fully remote with the respect of maximum 8 hours of work.

Hey Arjan! First of all congrats on hitting 100k! Well deserved! and I'm sure there are much much more to come. I'd also like to thank you for your videos, you're exactly this humble senior developer, mentor that each and every junior dev need nearby along on their journey. I've learnt a lot from your content. Thank you very much!

I like how this video gives a perspective on how a programmer can utilise the knowledge from the aforementioned books. This is one of its kind. More like these please!

This was great! Very interesting suggestions, I'll definitely read some of those. It would be cool if you made a video telling us a bit about your experiences with the businesses you've had. Very insightful! Thanks!

I would heartily recommend the masterpiece 'thinking fast and slow' by the Nobel Prize Daniel Kahneman. It really does a wonderful job of showing a number of pitfalls and failures of the way our brain works, and how we all make 'irrational' decision, even if we perceive ourselves as logical people. It is primarily intended as an educational book, with no direct practical advice, but there is still a good deal of things that you can actually borrow from it, in order to start spotting those pitfalls in your own reasoning and take better decision. Bonus point: that is all hard science, grounded in research papers and books: no random motivational stuff.

Great video! Have read Atomic Habits & The Subtle Art, both are pretty good. And kids these days don't appreciate a good type hint :)
