Finland has had a compulsory military service for men since 1917, and a voluntary military service for women since 1995. Alternatively men can choose a non-military service if they don't want to go to the army. The Soviet Union and Russia have always given the Finns a good motivation to defend the Finnish independence with all possible means.

I mean, even WW2 was fought by mostly conscripts, not volunteers. Honestly, 2 year service training seems good for mental and physical health of a youth. Did me wonders for camaraderie, skills, and life experience. Of course there is risk for real conflict, but you should be prepared to face the world as it really is.

In my country we have conscripts, it is a milestone for every Singaporean male in their transition to a man. Basically you enter the armed force or home team (we call it National Service here) as a teen and come out as a man. To some people, your rank and appointment is a sense of pride, some employers would even ask about your time in the National Service.

We even made 3 movies about it. Lol
