Our second day in the town of Chania in Crete was spent exploring areas away from the bay and revisiting the bay area. This day was sunny with blue skies and was perfect for photography and viewing new sections of the city including some excavation sites. Chania is the site of the Minoan settlement the Greeks called Kydonia. The area seems to be have been occupied since the Neolithic era (about 10,000 BC!). The first wave of settlers from mainland Greece started about 1100 BC. The Island was taken over by the Venetians in 1252 AD. They were driven out in 1263 but returned in 1285. The Ottoman army overran the city in 1645 after a 2-month siege (40,000 Turks died and the commander was executed when he returned to Turkey). Greece regained control of Crete in 1878.
