Ardennes American Cemetery is one of three American military cemeteries located in Belgium.
Many of the nearly 6,000 American fallen commemorated there perished in World War II air missions over Nazi-held Europe, or gave their lives during the Battle of the Bulge.
Ardennes is unique among all ABMC cemeteries as it served as the central identification point for the entire European Theater of Operations from the last days of the war until 1960.
Visitors to the cemetery are first met by the large, square memorial that overlooks the four plots of 5,317 graves.
Inside, inlaid marble panels depict combat and supply activities of WWII, among other ornamental features.
Outside, a massive eagle carved into the southern side of the memorial hovers over the nearby Tablets of the Missing, where 462 names are listed.
The American Battle Monuments Commission honors America's fallen service members and their stories at 26 overseas cemeteries and 31 monuments.
The other ABMC cemeteries in Belgium are the Flanders Field and Henri-Chapelle American cemeteries.

My great uncle is also buried here, along with one of his crew. T/Sgt Prescott C Piper, 775th Bomber Squadron, 463rd Bomb Group (H), 15th Air Force. Flying in Pete's Playhouse (42-31804), out of Foggia, Italy. KIA May 10, 1944, near Pottschach, Austria. Gone, but never forgotten.

I make it a point to visit our military cemeteries. I just returned from Europe where I visited the ABMC cemeteries in Florence and Luxembourg. Without a doubt, these places represent America and its servicemen and women to the highest degree. These are first-class memorials that should make every American proud of their country and the sacrifices given for her.

Honor and respect were two character virtues that our greatest generation demonstrated in spades. I can't say the same for our current crop.
