Sewing your own swimwear seems to be one of those projects that makes many of us quiver at the knees, but this need not be the case. If you’ve made a couple of garments using a stretch fabric like a jersey then you already have most of the skills needed to sew your own swimsuits. For those who think swim suits are difficult - the final exam for my one semester beginning sewing class in jr college (1973) was to make a lined cotton 2 piece swim suit. Construction as well as fit were graded. Oh, and it had to be completely cut out and constructed within the “ 4 hour final exam” period. Nobody failed. Very doable for an experienced beginner.

Thank you for finding so many great swimsuit options. As someone who has been making her own since the age of 12 and am now 63 I have a few other suggestions. Yoga shorts are a great option if you want more coverage on your legs. You can make them to any length. Also using a wide waistband you can adjust where it sits around the waist. I would just add a lining. Also tank top patterns are great for the swimsuit top especially if you can add a shelf bra.

I enjoyed watching one item of clothing and then presenting the patterns for it. Styled beach cover ups could also perhaps be looked at rather than 1 rectangle of fabric for a sarong. 🧵✂️

Great video! I just searched swimwear this morning, and was glad to confirm how good the Cottesloe is. I also like the Jalie 3350 and the Denise swimsuit from Pinup Girls, if anyone wants a one-piece.

Just FYI for the long sleeve swimsuit, there is actually swim fabrics with spf of 50! It might be fun to do a modest swimwear top 10. There are now options with longer shorts under swim skirts, etc. or even Rash guard patterns. I'm in the over 50 club and like a more modest approach. Plus I swim all winter and it's cold! It's great to have more coverage!
