Two years ago, I attended my sister’s kid’s birthday party with my fiancé (then boyfriend). While we were there, one of her kids, Savannah, started roughhousing with me. I grew up with siblings and cousins, so I didn’t mind—until Savannah escalated and hit me in the back of the head with a broomstick. I chased her to her room, tickled her as promised, and thought that was the end of it. But later in the kitchen, I saw Savannah grab a huge knife and grin like she intended to stab me. I immediately alerted her mom, who took the knife away. Instead of holding Savannah accountable, my sister turned it on me, implying that I scared her daughter. Then she heavily implied—both through words and tone—that it was inappropriate for me to be alone with her kid, making me sound like a creep. Furious, I left the party.
