Root is not required to install TWRP/Unlock Bootloader or change custom ROMs. I AM SERIOUS!

This is what I like. Clear answers. I needed to know this. As I used to use TWRP back in lg g3 s3 one plus 3t and many Samsung's. We used to be able to flash all types of rims and backups. Now things seem to have changed. Pretty cool.

Nice video bro. Most of the people talking about roms are not talking English which I can't understand. I appreciate your work.

While this is a good and helpful video, it only applies to nandroid backups on the same Android version.

I generally backup and restore nandroid backups across Android versions, both up and down. Before this never was a problem, but recently Android has started implementing major changes under the hood that render such operations impossible.

For eg. Android 11 introduced File Based Encryption (FBE) instead of Full Disk Encryption (FDE) which was the norm before and Android 12 and above only use FBE.
Android 11 also introduced scoped storage, where previously you could grant storage access to an app and it could do whatever it wanted wherever it wanted; with scoped storage you can only grant access to 1 directory/specific folder and the app can ONLY ACCESS that.

Then SE Linux, which used to be permissive by default (meaning apps could easily make system-wide changes) is now enforcing (meaning apps have a specific sandbox/area they are restricted to and can only affect that).

Android 12 and above also randomise the package names of installed apps so that other apps cannot interact with each other. If this wasn't bad enough, it regularly changes them so they are never the same and so cannot be identified.

You also need to grant permission to even view Android/data or media or obb, .

As you can imagine, lots of older but popular apps couldn't adapt and struggle with this and most are very restricted compared to what they used to be capable of doing.
This goes doubly so for root apps, since they by nature make system-wide changes.

This means that TWRP does not work across different versions of Android and indeed, there are currently 3 branches of TWRP, Pie (Android 9), Android 11 and Android 12.
If you try to mix them up, you will have a very hard time (as I learned the hard way).

Not to mention, official TWRP till now doesn't support decryption on FBE-based ROMs so you HAVE to remove your screen lock and other password/fingerprint otherwise it will not work. Unofficial builds can support decryption but they have their own issues.

TWRP also cannot decrypt /data which is the most important part because of the scrambling and randomisation that occurs on Android 12 and above.

Till now (Feb 2023) there is no TWRP version that can successfully backup and restore a nandroid backup on Android 12 or above.

Was the ROM you backed up itself encrypted with a screen lock in place? If yes, Full Disc or File Based Encryption?

Can you do the RESTORE from your laptop using the backup image created with TWRP? Like flashing the old os/backup?

On other videos I saw that it is not required to select all points for a backup because of a possible brick of stock ROM. What's your opinion to that?

Do you have control over where you store that backup? Like storing it to an flash drive connected via an otg or adapter

You ended up answering the question😅.

What about dual booting two custom os on a single device?

Nice Video Bro.
But I have a question.
If we backup rom in pendrive and delete from internal storage. Will Restore button detect backup file itself after we connect pendrive or we have to select backup file path manually?
