NFHS Rule 4-10 "A closely guarded situation occurs when a player in control of the ball in his/her team’s frontcourt, is continuously guarded by any opponent who is within six feet of the player who is HOLDING OR DRIBBLING the ball. The distance must be measured from the forward foot/feet of the defender to the forward foot/feet of the ball handler. A closely guarded count must be terminated when the offensive player in control of the ball gets his/her head and shoulders past the defensive player"
Rule book mentions nothing about a count restarting if they start dribble.

You can clearly see she forgot to signal her count, as she begins signaling in a more rapid manner when she realizes he is going to go over 5 seconds. Also, this is an example of a patient whistle... she calls slightly after the event happens, and it is generally a good practice as it helps officials make the right call.

Unless they changed the rule in the last 3 years he gets a new 5 count on the dribble and a new 5 count when he picks the dribble up

Bad call, he was dribbling the ball and backed away from the defender. She should've stopped the count

Like 95% of refs in sports, they wanna make it all about themselves. No, it wasn't a good call.

She was counting very fast also. Someone should explain to her that the count doesn’t go that fast either. And she shouldn’t have been counting to begin with. The defender wasn’t within 3 feet when she started counting. He probably got within 3 feet on the count when she got to four. And he did dribble and move forward which automatically resets the count. And there she was “don’t talk to me.” Lol 😂
