I woke up this morning in so much pain. Opening my eyes seemed impossible. It was like my eyes were beat shut...bruises up and down my arms and legs. Additionally, my wife was not beside me. I tried to call out for her but my mouth was in this aching pain. When I mustered the strength to sit up I was struck with instant fear. Through my peripheral vision, I saw the Duolingo bird sitting in the chair beside my bed- wooden baseball bat in hand. Please send help. By the time you read this, it might be too late.

I'm russian, native russian speaker and I've understood 80% of this video. A started learning english a few years ago and at the beginning I just learned only grammar rules and tenses. And when I attempted to watch english video or any other content I just wasn't able to understand any information. And, a few months ago, I accidentally found this channel and begin watching it. I'm very happy, that I found it. There are many very interesting video witch help me practice my english aurally. Thank you very much for your videos!

Did 100 Russian lessons on Mango back in college. Got me out of a semester and I already knew all the material in the class I took. Saying Mango is amazing is an understatement.

You say Duolingo doesn't work, but it accomplishes what it sets out to do. Just because it isn't the ONLY tool you need to become fluent in a language doesn't mean it is a BAD tool.

Great video!!
I just wanted to recommend two programs I consider very useful:
-Quizlet, for learning vocabulary.
-Tandem, for practicing with native speakers.

It's only been a week, but my 8yo has found Duolingo a fun way to introduce himself to Chinese Mandarin, and my daughter has found learning French to be a fun experience. Even my wife, who doesn't typically like gamified learning, has found it a fun experience learning Latin. As for an introduction to learning a language, Duolingo has made it a fun experience and look forward to moving to other forms of learning languages and apps.

As someone said that he cant pay ( he is in syria), i live in Lebanon, we have now (with corona) a big inflation, i think like 550%. So buying something online is VERY expensive even before the inflation, so all the tools i will be using, will be 100% free. trust me, if i had money, i would have paid for some stuff . also im 15 and are barely middle class. i use duolinguo, it has been about a month, i want to follow your tips about reading books and watching youtube. but i will do that maybe next 2 weeks or month because i am still beginner, but i did a notebook which i wrote all the words and tips i learned and stuff. Learnig italian btw

Edit : i practise about 2.5 hours everyday (1.5 hours learning new things and 1 hour practiing old stuff)

I'm starting to learn German for our History class at school and I only use YouTube and Google since Duolingo isn't working for me. With just watching videos from German learning channels, I could say that my German improved drastically. Sending good lucks to everyone whose learning a language during this quarantine. :>

I think Beelinguapp and Lingodeer are also pretty good. Lingodeer helps you practice grammar rules and Beelinguapp is for reading practice, the app shows the the text in your target language, reads it to you and then gives you the translation!

specifically for Japanese i use lingodeer rather than Duolingo (seeing a lot of people using Duolingo). It's consistent in using word that have been learn previously in a sentence. It can switch between kanji and hiragana or any other combinations in the top right corner. Well, for beginners like me it's very useful.

Dude! You missed hellotalk. I'd actually switch out the free part of italki for hellotalk. Hellotalk is a language exchange app, free built in translations, good layout for corrections etc, it's excellent!

nah, Duolingo is a great app and it's free. it's got a helpful community, stories, podcasts. seeing as I don't have that much time to learn languages, it really helps me to stay in touch with the vocabulary. I always recommend Duolingo and I'm not gonna stop anytime soon. ♥️

I couldn't have said it better myself, I hear people praise Anki as the most important language learning tool since sliced bread, but it's sooo clunky. I tried it for my japanese for a few days; but suddenly making flashcards, importing/exporting vocab decks and learning the program felt like a chore in of itself. And for whatever reason, the words on screen never stuck no matter how many times I went over them.

Now I make physical flashcards and use the Leitner system instead; and it works like magic. For whatever reason, physically writing down the vocab, and purposefully choosing the words I feel are useful for me to learn (rather than downloading a pre-made "5000 common words" list) makes it easy to learn and ascertain my 15 new words every day.
