I issue a survival challenge to my family to see if they can come up with a wild meal completely from scratch. Find out if they can manage to put together some food from nature!

My son will go after Northern Pike, while my wife will search out freshwater clams or bivalves. Bivalves are filter feeders and are found in sandy or muddy soil in many Northern Ontario lakes.

Northern Pike are voracious predators and will readily chase down a lure.

so the reason the mussels ("fresh water clams") are so chewy is because they are over cooked. once they are boiled or steamed enough for the shell to open they were done cooking. by adding them to the pike and cooking them further they were made chewy. not sure if you did this for food safety reasons or just because you didnt realize this. just some unasked for advice from a sportsman and biologist out of maine.
