Bypassing the key to the starter on an outboard motor

So this shows how you connect a battery directly to a started to see if A) the starter will engage and B) see if your motor will turn freely

This motor is a 1987 40HP Evinrude that has been in my yard for almost 15 years. I sprayed oil into the cylinders and put the plugs back in before I tried it to minimized any potential scoring of the cylinders

Now I know I have something worth rebuilding, and the fun begins..

WARNING: Disconnect red double power lead to rectifier BEFORE doing this! this is such a noob thing to do as it weakens the delicate diodes in the rectifier. once they go, there goes your stator and probably power pack as well. #1 cause of ignition failure.

Yes you powered the starter but no power to ignition, I guess the starter works lol

You gotta get ignition power first before it'll start
