If any historical figure required a trilogy to cover the story of his life that impacted on so many people across Europe over such a long period of time it would be Napoleon. His influence not only to military doctrine (combined arms working independently) but to science (the Rosetta Stone) administration and law(napoleonic law) is still with us today. They should have made three films aptly titled ; 1.The Rise of a hero, 2. Reach for Empire, 3. Descent to immortality.

He looks like Napoleon bit he doesnt act anything like him. Yeah I didn't know the guy IRL, but you can read dozens of accounts from people who did and they all consistently talk about how jolly and energetic he was, the burning intensity of his stare, stomping his feet while throwing tantrum. Joaquin just looks like a depressed robotic old man which might work Napoleon at the end of his life but he is supposed to be represent Bonaparte during the rise and apex of his life...

"I could only think of Joaquin". Gladiator was 23 years ago, remember! You're 86, so you may not realize how much time has passed, but you still have to realize that there has been a whole new generation of actors that has come along so you don't need to get a 49-year-old to play someone in his 20s.

Joaquin forgot he's not playing Joker anymore, one of the saddest men on film. He's playing a man that tens of thousands are too follow into battle.

The problem is not that Joaquin is too old to play Napoleon, the problem is that they didn't use make up, technology, CGI whatever to make him look younger ! I mean they did it for Harrison Ford for the last Indiana Jones...

The only sad thing about this movie is it not being in French with English subtitles.

I’m French and I absolutely loved the movie, in part because of Joaquin. True to the real napoleon or his-story - to me - is secondary. There are, it seems, a lot of discrepancies between what really happened and this movie… but at this point, it doesn’t matter.

It is a great movie. And one that is a bit long, but Joaquin and Ridley worth it all. Well done to the rest of the cast too.

He doesn't look like Napoleon any more than a guy with short brown hair. He's very old, in fact when Napoleon died he was 3 years older than Joakim now and I doubt this film will be about his time on St Helena
