someone was saying that the helicopter went into a microclimate, or a climate situation drastically different than anything around it. That made it difficult for the pilot to see and feel the surroundings.

I believe malfunction or last second patchy terrain which could have been prevented"( if that's the reason) if he had a weather terrain gps that alerts you if you're close to a mountain & directs you to move away safely

The circles were a flight holding pattern. Look, the pilot didn't do a bad job. He was doing what he was suppose to (Follow the 101). He made a hard turn prob because he thought they were at their destination. So he tried to get out by making a 180 degree turn. His hard fall was probably him steering the copter left. Maybe copter drops normally in a turn. Fog hindered true visual distance. Boom.

Looking at the departure station Orange County Airfields aerographical data, and Burbank Airfields weather data, the ingredients were there for fog and haze. The terrain is composed of hills and mountains south, southwest of the destination airfield. Visibility was posted and reported below 1000 ft the entire route of the flight which means instrument flight rules on departures and landings at both arrival and departure airfields.
With temperatures in the 50s, and humidity in the 70s, it's all the ingredients needed for fog, not to mention a light to .medium haze before sunrise which could loom on to midday before dissipating.
Skikorsky helicopter REFERENCE : JANES PUBLICATION, Shows the maximum capacity at 13 people, meaning it was near maximum capacity. Luggage, carry ons, and excess other items are not known.
These helicopters carry a weight rating, which have to be adhered to. A weight rating conversion chart looks like a plaquard or factory sticker. Format somewhat like this :
13 persons, or 8, 500 Pounds ( EST.)
This is a 17.5 million dollar loss according to the FAA Southwest region, not including ground damages.
