I'm excited to share today's podcast with you all about hunting. For many, hunting brings up negative connotations or even sadness. My guest can completely understand that as he wasn't raised with hunting as I was.

My husband is a big hunter, and he has taught all of our kids to hunt. They have to take the hunter course, even if they don't want to hunt when they grow up. It's a good skill to have even if they don't want to at the moment! 🇨🇦

Great conversation! I especially enjoyed the link between hunters and conservation. I have never known a hunter who didn't love and appreciate wildlife.

I knew Fred Bear and worked in a coffee cup dinner he would stop by often in Grayling Michigan in the Sixties and I saw the corporate world steal Bear Archer from him causing the longest workers strike in the Seventies. That was before the innovation of the compound bow...

I’m the wife of a hunter and although it’s not something I personally want to do, I fully support my husband hunting. They often joke about me coming along because they need a camp cook lol.
Great chat.

Great conversation. I’m 48 so I don’t have to take the hunter’s course either, but I figured it would be really beneficial to find out how much I have absolutely no clue about- which really was most everything, like he said. Being that I didn’t grow up hunting or have a husband that hunts, I didn’t realize there is so much more to learn about. I agree, everyone would benefit from a hunters course, even if they don’t plan on hunting at the time. Really expanded my knowledge and understanding. He was so interesting, funny and a wealth of information. I really liked his story and journey. I have yet to hunt, but do plan to soon. Thank you!

I grew up in a hunting family but moved to the suburbs. My husband has taken up the interest (I like foraging & other useful skills) & we have been learning about our state's rules and norms to prep for the upcoming season.

Regarding where to start learning to hunt. For people near Oregon, check out Yow's hunting camp. It used to be a "ladies hunting camp" only, they have now expanded. But what was cool was they had a ton of classes, everything from species specific like blacktail, turkey, elk etc. But they also had classes on knife sharpening, packing your pack, backing up a trailer and so much more. It was definately my starting point. Amazing camp.
Next is youtube check out the "elk bros", awesome way to learn about the species and hunting. It's possible to do this. I am a female hunter who had no one to teach me, so i got going this way. Then my husband got hooked and he harvested his first animals this year as well. Love this podcast

Just signed up for the Miniherb Course. I love growing herbs. I have made a couple of salves but never a tenture. That is on my list to start doing. I have done alot of foraging this year - dandelion, plaintain, purple nettle, self heal, goldenrod, sweet violets, chickery, and Chamomile.

A lot in common here! Vegetarian for a decade, now I homestead and process our own meat. Gotta love it!

Super interested to hear this conversation. I'm a vegan and an animal rights activist, but agree with ethical hunting. It is important for conservation, and since humans are natural carnivores, it's good to see people eating ethically sourced meat as opposed to factory farmed animals.

Love your episode, I’m not a big hunter but have been in law enforcement most of my adult life.

Being from WA and trying to get into hunting, find a mentor to help, etc has been a DECADE of failure. It's SO hard to get in to when your family doesn't have any connections and you know no one else who does. :(

Ohio actually allows deer hunting with hand guns (caliber specific), rifle (caliber and ammunition specific) and black powder along with the other mentioned items. Each has regulations around the hunting method and specific windows open for hunting with that method.
Great conversation. Thank you.

Hunters definitely care more about conservation than those that don't hunt. Hunting is good for the animal population and way more humane a death than CWD or being eatwn by a predator.

Along with hunting is the taking of any animal life. Maybe you do not hunt but still need to know how to ethically take an animals life to process it and convert it into food. Somewhat of a nasty business. Be it a chicken, rabbit or Elk. I agree, start with the small game and work up if possible.
