It's normal to press the clock after a move, checkmate or not. I could be wrong and it's not checkmate. Pressing the clock usually signifies that a move is totally completed (to mark the end of one's turn), although of course the other critical elements of making a move are touching a chess piece and letting go of a chess piece.

I'm not sure that Wang Hao was still considering his move after he took my pawn on f5 and was holding his knight. I think he noticed the mate, and was wondering can he play another move with the knight to avoid the mate for example Nf3 and there would not be any mate, but since I had a pawn on f5 and he had already just taken it, he had no choice but to play Nxf5. I may be wrong though since he was quite surprised by the checkmate.

The music score is called "Acoustic Sunrise" and is included in iLife for Mac. In my case it's in the folder Audio - Apple Loops - Apple - iLife Sound Effects -Jingles. And yes I'm the same Alexandra Kosteniuk who just beat Hou Yifan in the European Club Cup last week :-)

It's one of the many royalty-free music clips that comes bundled with Apple's Garageband/Final Cut Studio software packages.

You are right in normal 5-minute blitz games the player with the black pieces used to choose the side of the clock. Now many top tournaments have electronic boards and clocks, and they cannot be moved because of the cables, also the arbiters need to see the clock. It's sometimes hard to make the players change sides due to name cards or Live TV recordings. It's not an issue so much now because most blitz tournaments have time increments like 2 seconds per move (like in this game).

Thanks for your kind comment. At master+ level, a very small proportion of games go all the way to checkmate, that happens usually only in speed games where the checkmate is very unexpected. I have a few of those, apart from this game, also on this channel, against Grischuk and Morozevich.

Magnus is a chessplayer, not a clockplayer

He almost knew it was over before when he took the pawn with the knight ungaurding g2. Did you see how his hand lingered on the knight and Alexander gives a slight nod as if saying "yes, make that move". He's lost when he touches the knight anyway. Great video from Alexander who dispatches yet another super GM. I also liked her win against Carlsen.

Look at this video, where do you see that women are playing separate from men? I'm a woman and playing with a man. Some tournaments have only men, some have only women, and some have both men and women. Chess is one of the very few sports where women are allowed to play and fight for prizes and titles in men's tournaments.Just last week I won the Swiss men's and women's National titles in a championship which was mixed and open to both men and women.

Actually this was only a blitz tournament before the main Grandmaster event in Biel, which Wang Hao won brilliantly! So it's likely this blitz game did not bother him too much.

Yes, the "girl" you asked about is an international chess grandmaster and the 12th women's world chess champion.

It would have been nice if it were slowed down a bit more!

After checkmate she clicked on clock and she was still staring at the board thinking "is this really happening?" lol

It's a good habit to press the clock even after checkmate. For instance, let's say you're running out of time, you checkmate your opponent but your time runs out before you can press the clock, the game is considered drawn.
