Make Synology NAS Run Faster?... Default SHR 2 or RAID 6 👨🏻

SPOILER: Switch from SHR to RAID... In this in performance review, I go through the process of switching my setup from SHR to RAID to let you know how much faster a vanilla RAID 6 setup is compared to the recommended system default of SHR.

RESULTS
For transferring 35GB of data.
Synology NAS SHR2 Encrypted Volume: 25 minutes
Synology NAS RAID6 Unencrypted Volume: 5 and half minutes.
QNAP NAS RAID6 Encrypted Volume: 2 minutes and 11 seconds.

Unfortunately I didn't get round to testing RAID6 Encrypted performance on a Synology, but just a word of warning, please make sure you choose wisely when setting up your NAS, as once you go with the system default of SHR, you're stuck with it. There's no way to migrate it over to RAID. SHR does give you extra flexibility when adding different sized drives, but in my experience it is very slow. For maximum performance of course, go for a QNAP instead.

Thunderbolt 3 compared to Gigabit Ethernet. :) Well done you expert

So many variables changed at the same time - no conclusion to draw *at all*

wow you made no comparable results at all... no repeated tests to validate variance from random occurrences, different means of data transfer with vastly different speeds (if you used thunderbolt 3, why not compare it with 40g fiber-optics SFP+ connection?, different states of the volume and not even a trustworthy test utility. Why even bother? Not to favor any of them but neither of the units can be trusted based on your results.

Encrypted is always going to be massively slower than unencypted. You reallya should compare SHR2 unencypted to Raid6 unencrypyed, SHR unencypted to Raid5 unencrypted, them do it all encrypted. This is the only way to really tell if SHR2 is faster than Raid6 and SHR is faster than Raid5.

Très bonne information merci beaucoup et j'adore la moustache 👨‍🎨

this just in: unencrypted transfers over a 40gbit thunderbolt connection are faster than encrypted transfers over a 10gbit network connection. in other news, the sky is blue and taxes are inevitable

I really appreciate this. I use SHR-2 for flexibility of drives. I recommend it. However, if you need that boost of performance: R6. or R10. Again, Advise against usting the speed and fast RAIDs unless you need them. SHR-1 and 2 blow the competition away with different hard drive sizes.

Mate I am going to buy a NAS, to edit on it, should I go for a 1019+ with 2 NVME?

Thanks, that saves me some time testing this myself!
