2015 Toyota Tundra 5.7 Cold Start Issues

Anyone have any idea why my truck is doing this? Only happens on cold start if I turn the key and start immediately. If I turn the key to the on position and let it sit for 5-10 seconds and then start, it will fire and start up but the RPM's drop low, shutters, and then idles back up on its own.

It is the coolant temperature sensor. It tells ECM how much fuel the motor needs at startup.

Well, I used to be a tech, and before I even read your explanation, I thought that you are starting too fast. Because you did that, the engine, plus computer, actually ended up flooding the engine ... since it's cold out. It could actually happen in warmer months too, but unlikely. I suggest, given it is cold, turn the key on, wait for the fuel pump to shut off, then start. You likely can hear the fuel pump wine. It will turn on to prime the system, usually run for a few seconds, then stop. Then start the truck. Should start right up every time, even if -15 degrees

My 2013 rock warrior did this exact same thing for a week or so in sub zero weather. Dealer said it showed bad fuel mix and did a computer update. Never had another issue.

I'm guessing, given the low mileage, you still had the factory original battery. I've got a 2016 and have already had to boost the battery due to several days of -20 Celsius weather. Following some online research I've found that the OE battery has a tendency of crapping out after 2 years, especially in colder weather. I'm heading to NAPA to grab one if theirs and see how it goes.

I have this same issue and the dealer and Toyota won't do anything . They say it's normal. Sometimes it takes more than one attempt to start. I expected more from Toyota. Embarrassing to struggle to get it to start when my brother's new Chevy starts every time.

Did you ever find the resolution for this? Also have a 2015 Tundra with exact same issue.

I took it to the dealer and they re-flashed the computer. They said it was “running lean”. No more issues after it was done.

Of course, not covered under warranty and cost $120
