The Hooters - 500 miles (lyrics)

If you missed the train I'm on, you will know that I am gone
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles
A hundred miles, a hundred miles, a hundred miles, a hundred miles
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles

Not a shirt on my back, not a penny to my name
And the land that I once loved is not my own
Lord I'm one, Lord I'm two, Lord I'm three, Lord I'm four
Lord I'm five hundred miles away from home

A hundred tanks along the square, one man stands and stops them there
Someday soon the tide'll turn and I'll be free
Well I'll be free, I'll be free, I'll come home to my country
Someday soon the tide'll turn and I'll be free

If you missed the train I'm on, you will know that I am gone
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles
Lord I'm one, Lord I'm two, Lord I'm three, Lord I'm four
Lord I'm five hundred miles away from home
Lord I'm five hundred miles away from home, yea

Well I'll be free, I'll be free, I'll come home to my country
Lord I'm five hundred miles away from home
You can hear the whistle blow five hundred miles
Lord I'm five hundred miles away from home.

I am now 76 years old and have cancer that is no longer curable. The songs from the 60s/70s keep me going! Because they come from a wonderful time when music was booming! The best groups and songs all the time. And our life was still worth living! I am glad to have grown up in that time, which made my life positive. That time will never come

4 years ago, when I practically lost everything (the place I used to call home for 42 years, my business, my family) I made a trip almost 500 miles, to a new city that I now call home.
Having all my belongings stuffed in my car, a tank full of gas and just a little bit of spare money in my wallet, I played this song all the way to my new home, driving all night to get there.

Bless you Hooters for keeping me company all the way...

A hundred tanks along the square, one man stands and stops them there. Most young people in my country don't even know what happened that day😢

This song was the very first we sang in school‘s choir when I joined. Now, six years later I discovered it on YouTube and enjoy it almost more than any other song at the moment. Well done!

I sang this to every newborn child I had. They are all grown. And they all remember this song as it is engraved.

After 18 years of living in my hometown, where I was born and raised: I had to move away due to poverty and all sorts of reasons.

Leaving my best friend of 14 years, my mother and my younger sibling. I would never wish such a fate to anyone. To see their loved ones crying as their bus is slowly departing into the unknown. Almost 800 miles and a couple of years later, I'm singing this song at the top of my lungs.

Life was not so merciful to me, but I'm still going strong and learning the new language as best as I can. Nowadays, I have no one to go back to my home. My hometown is almost empty and sad, that's what hurts the most. When everything slowly falls apart.
