I am Japanese. So I don't know much English. But this song reminds me of my hometown and old days. I am very happy to know such a wonderful song.

Can we all appreciate two things:
1. Her British accent at the beginning
2. How gorgeously polite she is to her audience

If it weren't for YouTube I'd still be in the dark, hidden from the privilege of hearing Joan Baez's voice. Thank you for the upload and for further expanding my collection of music.

Man, it's incredible just how much emotion someone's voice can carry. Her voice is just too good.

500 miles
If you miss the train I'm on, you will know that I am gone
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles,
A hundred miles, a hundred miles, a hundred miles, a hundred miles,
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles.

Lord I'm one, Lord I'm two, Lord I'm three, Lord I'm four,
Lord I'm 500 miles from my home.
500 miles, 500 miles, 500 miles, 500 miles
Lord I'm five hundred miles from my home.

Not a shirt on my back, not a penny to my name
Lord I can't go a-home this a-way
This a-away, this a-way, this a-way, this a-way,
Lord I can't go a-home this a-way.

If you miss the train I'm on you will know that I am gone
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles.
A hundred miles, a hundred miles, a hundred miles, a hundred miles,
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles.

The song was written by railway construction workers and became a folk sensation. It came to limelight in the music industry with the original covers later... However, the beauty of the song is not just in the haunting melody but the 500 miles symbolizes so much more than just a journey it a place away from home.. It's the loss and sadness if being separated from the supreme being... It is an echo of the pain every person feels when away from home. It is a song that invariably, particularly with Joan's voice accompanied with her shy smile never fails to bring tears... That that are a mix of sadness and of beauty at the same time, of longing and melancholy along with hope at the same time...Joan, you're so beautiful and your singing so angelic that I can just feel blessed seeing and hearing you. You're cleared and thank you for blessing is with your renditions..

Nobody who never listened to Joan Baez before is prepared for that voice. Joans voice is so incredibly clear and soft, yet it hits you like a hammer when you hear it for the first time. It still gives me goosebumps after all these years.

My dad used to sing this to me as a kid. He was really young when he left his parents to study abroad before he and my mom brought our family to the US and I remember as a kid thinking that my dad wrote this song because of how much he would sing it and how it related to his life that he would tell us about any chance he got. This song really brings back memories that I nearly forgot and I’m sure my dad will eventually forget too but for now I’m glad we got to share memories this song brings us.

There is some sort of healing universality in this woman's voice. The inspiration I have got from her has helped me on so many levels.
