David, you're one of the only real ones on social media in the mixing/mastering world. I appreciate all of the philosophical points you make throughout your videos.

For people in the home studio, starting with the master bus chain is very good advice. I've collected a whole heap of outboard gear now, and still don't have anything I'd want to put on my master bus. It's great for mixing hybrid, but mixing hybrid makes switching projects and recalling a nightmare so the end result is that it all only gets used sometimes for tracking and then only on the one serious project I know I'm going to finish - and the rest of the time it just sits there. If I could do it all again I would key maybe just one of the units I have and the rest of that money I would've invested in a good bus compressor and EQ for my master bus. That's something that would be far simpler to recall and use in every project and get my money's worth out of it.

When I was working in a small 8 track studio during the 80th I had to learn how to use the equipment to its maximum because I needed to maximize its potential due to the low budget the studio had. That was the best lesson ever, so start small and learn the equipment's potential, plugins and hardware, until you feel a limitation and a desire like, "if I just could do...", then it's time to find this thing that can do that. By that time I had one benefit that I'm educated in electronics, so I didn't read manuals, instead I was looking at the electric schematics which was more informative. Anyway, don't buy tones of whatever before deeply exploring what you have and how you can use and abuse it.

Been producing music for 20+ years but new to the analog world. Would definitely appreciate the beginner's guide. Got the Drawmer 1978 for drums/2buss and started building a 500 rack with SSL SiX & an API 527 for tracking. Master buss chain to come. Something I've already noticed however, is that I'm starting to spend increasing amount of time rerouting. When is a good time to invest in a patchbay/alternative solutions to avoid losing too much? Thanks for the great content!

Such a big topic here.
Regarding the Fusion, this is a unit I own and I really love. I do not use it on every projects, on certains it works like a charm while on some it just does nothing big. As you said David, this is regarding every project we work on. Not a lot of people seems to understand this, even some "professionals" I faced few times that tried to convinced me this unit is trash. Their argues : "it's not mastering grade", "I can do better with plugins", "that's a waste of money" blablabla. I felt like just because they do not like it, they have to say it out loud everywhere and try to convinced everyone not to buy one. For what reason ? I guess because they think they have the truth.
I've read several times the Fusion is a very controversial tools from SSL, like it's "cheap" compares to what they usually do, the quality is average, and so… that's what some people try to say, comparing the fusion with some Neve or Tegeler, and more.I still do not understand why some people do not get the point that tastes are important in the gear we chose and that if we chose it, it's because we want/need it, that's our business, we do what we want.

Thanks David for such a video, some talks like this one is refreshing some minds I hope.
Greetings.

Wesaudio is a workhorse for a project studio. Specially ng compressor, I use for recording and for mixing, it just make everything I pass through sounds great, really. Even only using the THD, just amazing.

Thank you for making some sense every time you talk. I would LOVE to see a video about your patch-bay. One thing people don't know is that you need to patch all your gear into something to be able to use it. That would be golden info on the channel.

Agree 💯. Also using analog can help you understand plugin emulations better. At least for me 😎

Best channel ever, period! Thank you David!

I'm not a mix engineer but I understand what David is saying when he says it takes a long time. When I see how a compressor can react and act in different ways...lol

Totally agree. A piece of hardware (as a plugin) doesn't work for everything neither for every mix/master. There's no magical "something" that works every single time. And of course, it is important to respect the learning curve (don't forget about read the manuals of the hardware/vst's) to get the most of your tools

The truth is complicated. Some topics are complex and take years of experience to begin to have an understanding of them. There are no shortcuts to this kind of sophisticated, subtle understanding. Expertise is real. For some areas of human understanding, there is no substitute for taking the time to dive deeply into them in order to slowly form a conceptual foundation. All of these assertions are true whether you're talking about understanding human systems neuroscience or understanding audio engineering and mixing and mastering. Thank goodness we all have David, who treats us like adults, reads his audience's needs and (lack of) understanding very adeptly, and delivers the cold, complicated truth. 🌊

You always provide the hard facts and that is what I really enjoy about your channel. I am a musician and hobby recording enthusiast and recently came to the conclusion that I want to add analogue warmth to my mixes by adding a piece of hardware. Because I want to experiment and not break the bank, I bought a $125 Behringer stereo tube preamp. Its been discontinued, but its where I will start and I plan to let my ears decide if I made a mistake or not. If I hear more transient warmth on the highs and lows as I hope to hear, I will then decide if my cheap purchase was worth it. Also upgraded to a Tascam series 208I along with the 8 channel tascam that brings me up to 12 total pres for recording drums. After a ton of research, I determined that the advice of getting RME would leave me with alot less flexibility, less Channels and cost twice as much. Slightly better converters and pres, but much better? Not a chance at this price point. Preamps and converters have come a LONG way in 15 years since I had my focusrite Saffire pro 40. Instead, with the extra money, I upgraded my Microphones on the drums to Lewit DTP340TT toms mics.

I’d love to go 500 series but I just can’t justify it as a hobby. I just got all UAD plug-in versions of the API stuff and a couple of tape emulators. It works well enough. I have no idea what I’m doing anyways, I just turn the knobs till it sounds good.

It's more about tracking than mixing, but I love the Golden Age Project Pre 73! Great value for money, and infinitely better than tracking through my interface. :D

To date, all I care is workflow. I have to know that gear, no matter it’s an analog piece or plugin, very well. I know I could get the result I want when I put that on. That makes my mixes consistent which I deliver satisfied results to my clients. No one cares whether you mix ITB or hybrid or 100% analog, if it sounds great. Now I just spend on sth that makes my life easier, regardless they are analog or plugin. I don’t care

Where you can't go too far wrong is certainly the monitors. Whether you are a musician to have a better rendering of what you are playing or for engineers to obtain a more precise mix.
