Jacob I love But Esau I have hated

Did God really love Jacob and hate Esau as individuals before they were born and before they had done anything good or bad? Did God choose one for salvation and the other for damnation before the very foundation of the world? Some people say "yes" and they even believe that God chose some people for salvation and others for damnation before they were even born and before they had done anything good or bad. In other words, billions of people will burn in hell for all eternity because God chose to hate them and this hatred is not based on anything good or bad that they had done. Something is wrong with this interpretation. It's morally wrong to express hatred towards someone who has done nothing wrong.

Matthew 5:22 But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment.

This is not speaking of Jacob and Esau as individuals but as nations, and the only thing that was said before they were born was that the older will serve the younger. The hatred part was spoken thousands of years after both Jacob and Esau were buried and dead.

When it says “for the children not yet being born” it is not referring to some time in eternity past. It’s referring to a very definite time in history just before Jacob and Esau were born.

Now Isaac pleaded with the LORD for his wife, because she was barren; and the LORD granted his plea, and Rebekah his wife conceived. But the children struggled together within her; and she said, "If all is well, why am I like this?" So she went to inquire of the LORD. And the LORD said to her: "Two nations are in your womb, Two peoples shall be separated from your body; One people shall be stronger than the other, And the older shall serve the younger." Genesis 25:21-23

So, we are talking about two nations here, not two individual people. It’s worth noting that Esau never served Jacob, but the Edomites, the descendants of Esau, did serve Israel as a nation when they were conquered by king David.

Likewise, when the bible says Jacob I have loved but Esau I have hated, that’s not referring to the individuals but to the nations of Israel and Edom.

"I have loved you," says the LORD. "Yet you say, 'In what way have You loved us?' Was not Esau Jacob's brother?" Says the LORD. "Yet Jacob I have loved; But Esau I have hated, And laid waste his mountains and his heritage For the jackals of the wilderness." Even though Edom has said, "We have been impoverished, But we will return and build the desolate places," Thus says the LORD of hosts: "They may build, but I will throw down; They shall be called the Territory of Wickedness, And the people against whom the LORD will have indignation forever. Malachi 1:2-4

Malachi prophesied these words after Israel’s return from captivity in Babylon and the point that Malachi was making is that after the Babylonian captivity God had re-established Israel but he had prevented the edomites from returning to rebuild their land.

Also, hate is a pretty strong word today, but we have to remember Jesus said that unless you hate your mother and father you are not worthy of him.

Luke 14:26 "If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.

Most people understand Jesus as saying that you need to love him so much that in comparison your love for your father and mother seems like hatred.

When the bible talks about predestination, it’s not talking about “who” will be predestined, but rather “what” will be predestined.

God predestined/chooses that those who put their faith in Christ will he saved. He doesn’t determine who will put their faith in Christ.

And he predetermined that those who become Christians would be sanctified (because the born again experience produces transformation).

The default human mode with free will, is sinful. But God, in His incredible mercy, brought forth Jesus to save us. We all deserve Hell.

“Jacob I have loved, Esau have I hated” is actually a prophetic statement. It’s not solely about Jacob and Esau, it’s about two nations born from these men and GOD is speaking from an eternal perspective. Remember that Esau’s entire bloodline is cursed in the book of Obadiah for their transgressions. So I’m glad you caught that this is about nations, not solely individuals

God is absolutely Sovereign over all. His ways are beyond our ways for who knows the mind of God but the Spirit of God. I believe that God's sovereignty and man's freewill are co-exsitent how this works out is beyond our understanding but that we should trust the Lord who is all-wise and all-knowing.

Hosea 12:3-7 also refers to Jacob and Esau:
“3 He took his brother by the heel in the womb, and by his strength he had power with God:

4 Yea, he had power over the angel, and prevailed: he wept, and made supplication unto him: he found him in Bethel, and there he spake with us;

5 Even the Lord God of hosts; the Lord is his memorial.

6 Therefore turn thou to thy God: keep mercy and judgment and wait on thy God continually.

7 He is a merchant, the balances of deceit are in his hand: he loveth to oppress.”

Exactly, spot on! Jesus the Lamb of God who takes away the Sin of the World. Not the Lamb of God who takes away the Sin of some and the others are Damned.

'Some people teach that God has chosen some people before the foundation of world for salvation....', because it's true. Ephesians 1:4 "According as He hath chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before
Him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, .."

God is eternal. He knows our hearts before we experience our own lives.

We are saved only by Grace alone through Faith alone, the entire chapter of Romans, nine is dedicated to the doctrine of election. Sovereign Grace.

Notice he leaves out the verses in Hebrews which points out the individual Esau was beyond salvation because he did not believe.
This video is merely another way of begging the question. Everyone agrees that those that believe are saved and those that don’t believe are not. The issue is how do you receive repentance and thus belief. According to Paul we are all dead in our trespasses and He is the one that saves us. And in Ephesians Paul states that believers were chosen before time.

For lack of better term, I’m a calvinistic Christian (not reformed), and I enjoy your channel very much. I agree with you on the majority of what you teach. I noticed you read verses 10-13, but if we continue reading in verse 14 and go through verse 23, it brings this into a clearer context. Romans 9 does deal with election, and it does establish that God is sovereign in salvation.

Now, I don’t believe God predestined anyone to Hell, but some hyper-Calvinists do (they’re wrong). I do believe God desires all to be saved, and takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked. But that doesn’t negate His sovereignty over who is ultimately saved. I have much respect for you, Brother, but there’s no way around predestination unto salvation. I love and appreciate your channel, and will continue to do so. I just think you’re a little off target here. Be blessed.

God is not willing that any should perish and none of his elect will that he has chosen from the foundation of the world. God is the savior to all people especially to us who believe. God saves everyone temporarily and some for eternity.

Paul's conversion proves that God chooses us and he wrote about it in his letters.

The unbelievers sin sends them to hell.
