What Killed Skype? (It Wasn't Zoom). Skype was a formidable force, dominating the video conferencing landscape for much of the 2010s.
➡️ That should have meant it was in a position to capitalize on the huge increase in the need for video calling as the Covid pandemic hit.
Instead, the company has languished as one of its main competitors, Zoom, has grown and soaked up more and more of the market share.

But while it may be easy to blame Skype’s demise on Zoom’s success, the reality is actually a lot more nuanced than that.
➡️ In this video, we delve deep into the factors behind Skype’s worsening position in the market, including looking at the company’s decisions and strategies which meant it has not managed to maintain the success it once had.
All around, Skype’s users have started to abandon it - and that trend doesn’t look like it’s going to reverse any time soon. This is the story of Skype and how it lost its identity.

💬 What do you think the future holds for the company - and do you think there is anything its leaders can do to turn the tide on its poor fortunes? Let us know in the comments section below.

10:20 video calling didn't come to WhatsApp until late 2016. Even so, it was only one-to-one and group video and audio calls didn't come until late 2018. When Microsoft was fumbling with Skype, it was in the early 201x. Teams launched in 2017. So technically it's not right to say that WhatsApp could do everything Skype could do and more in the early 201x. Skype was still way ahead in video and voice back then, but WhatsApp was far better for chat.

In fact, in the early 201x, MSN Messenger (or Windows Live Messenger) and BlackBerry Messenger were all the rage. But because Microsoft basically killed MSN Messenger around at that time, WhatsApp basically took over the vacuum. If not for Microsoft's string of bad decisions around MSN Messenger, whether fixing bugs or making apps for all mobile devices (remember, Microsoft was still trying to fight share for its Windows Phone devices then), WhatsApp wouldn't have taken off as successfully as it did.
