It's almost surreal to hear music like this. It feels, to me, like travelling to a time of old. I heard this first in the movie "Lord of Misrule".

Saw this performed live with a piano and a squeeze box last night.

Mind blowing, excellent.

It takes me to a spiritual depth. A distant vague yearning for old England culture.

Sam Lee is such an amazing artist... the music alone is astonishing, but always such incredible videos, too. So pleased to have found this man (even if I come to it relatively late!). Heading to get OldWow+ now.

John Barleycorn – traditional (Sam Lee video version)

There came three men out of the west, their fortunes for to try
And they did make a solemn oath: John Barleycorn must die
They buried him beneath the earth, put clods above his head
Then these three men they did conclude John Barleycorn was dead

They laid him there a long fortnight, 'til rain from the heavens did fall
Then Barleycorn he sprung green leaves which quite amazed them all
They left him there midsummer 'til he grew pale and wan
Then Barleycorn grew a long grey beard much like unto a man

They hired men with scythes so sharp to cut him off at the knee
See how they served John Barleycorn, they served him bitterly
They hired men with forks and rakes to stab him through the heart
But the carter served him worse than that, for he bound him to a cart

They drove him ‘round and ‘round again until they come to a barn
And there they made a Barley mow, a mow of John Barleycorn
They hired men with crabtree sticks to beat him skin from bone
But the miller served him worse than that, for he ground him between two stones

They put him in a cistern deep and drowned him in water clear
And then they brewed him worse than that, they brewed him into the beer
Put white wine in your bottle, and cider in a can
But Barleycorn in a brown bowl will prove the stronger man

I like this song found in the film Lord of Miscruce greetings from Indonesia

I love this arrangement! Playing up the sinister turns a black-humour drinking song into something just a little edgy and powerful.

Can feel those vibes through the images, though, eesh.

The lyrics to this song describe the gruesome murder of John Barleycorn so well it gives me chills. Love this!
