As a farmer this makes me tear up. Summarizes the lifespan of a crop (corn) in the most beautiful and profound way. Absolute genius

When I heard this at about age 9 (1971) it changed me forever. I began to see the world and music differently. I am now 61 and was just singing this while putting my kid on the School Bus and had to listen to it when I got in the house.

The song is an old traditional folk song with many verses.Traffics version is only a few of them. There are over a hundred verses in the original song.

What’s with all the rocks ? Barley doesn’t grow in deserts .

A masterpiece of music from an old song. The lyrics are indeed “deep” with meaning. I can’t name the instruments, but certainly the flute type instrumentals through the song add reverence to the singer, in my opinion. I’m not an expert.

I think it refers to making whisky too as the kettle and pot is mentioned at the end. Great song that came out the year I graduated High school

The english countryside would have been a better backdrop, given sir john's homelands...

John Barleycorn sounds like they're killing, torturing some poor soul during the renaissance. It was written and sung brilliantly.

"tied him by the waist" not "way" in the fifth verse.

This song is about a person. Not about barley corn growing in the field.
