I've loved this miniseries since its first broadcast; I watch it almost every year. I dearly wish that the BBC would either release it on DVD or stream it digitally.

Thanks for uploading this. I remember watching it on its first broadcast on the BBC. David Lean was meant to film this - but it ended up as a BBC co-production of a mini series.

Like Marty Conroy below Ennio Morricone is one of my favorite contemporary composers. I have this music but never knew the film it came from. Thank you for uploading this for us.

Albert Finney is phenomenal. Nobody can play an alcoholic like he can...

Music by Ennio Morricone, all I needed to see.

I read the book & wanted to find out about Old Giorgio & Linda, at the end, so I did an internet search...& came across this mini series while I was searching.

This is an interesting drama...& moderately good, but it bears very little resemblance to Conrad's book, Nostromo!

Yes indeed.
I remember this.
1970s, was it?
You cannot go wrong with a Conrad, 'done good', by bbc.
They also do a lot of his Ouvre on BBC radio
😊🇮🇪🍀

Definitely belongs on DVD. It was an international production, so someone deep in the financing is the blockage.
The screenplay Christopher Hampton wrote with David Lean has been published, and it's just as well it was never filmed. The story takes such setting-up that the ending comes in a rush. Hampton does mention that the name "Nostromo" is the Italian term for "bosun", a ship's deck boss, though it literally means "our man". Conrad was probably happy with both meanings.
It was made for the BBC in the pre-subtitle age, which is why some performances may not seem as good as others. I've seen Amendola in Italian films, and he's much more natural and fluent in them. It's not that he can't speak clear English; he's an Italian actor and he's deprived of one of his finest tools. It shows up especially in his scenes with Cardinale. They're trying to speak passionately in a language not as passionate as their native tongue.

After searching for it for so long, I am forever in your debt, good sir. <3

On second viewing, I have revised my opinion. While Scorsese would have made a masterpiece, (The Lean estate gave him the rights.) this is an excellent miniseries.

Read the book...this version is so heavy handed, none of the charm and subtlety of Conrad's writing.

Yes I agree entirely with Tamarix Many thanks

Although Conrad was Polish, he wasn't in fact of Polish birth. He was born in Berdych (if I've spelt that right), a town about 50 miles west of Kyiv in Ukraine.

I get the feeling that Joseph Conrad would hardly recognize his work in these adaptions .
