Ahoy! Let’s Think! Today we answer the question Why Do We Hiccup?!

We’ve all had them before. They usually come unexpectedly and we never know how long they’ll last. So why exactly do we hiccup? In simple terms, a hiccup is a reflex and happens in your diaphragm. When something irritates your diaphragm it can cause it to spasm forcing you to suddenly suck air into your throat. The air hits your voice box and causes it to immediately close which creates the distinct sound “hic.”

Hiccups can be caused by numerous things both physically and emotionally. They can include eating too much food or too fast, gulping down carbonated drinks, shock or stress, and even an abrupt change in temperature.

You’ve probably heard of home remedies to help stop hiccups such as holding your breath for a short amount of time, drinking a glass of water or even being suddenly frightened. Unfortunately, there is no scientific evidence that any of these actually cure hiccups. Luckily hiccups are temporary, typically lasting about 1-2 hours at most, unless you're Charles Osborne who holds the Guiness World Record for longest hiccup attack at 68 years. It’s estimated he had 430 million hiccups. That’s a lot of hiccups.

So that answers the question, Why Do We Hiccup?. That took some thinking!
