I remember seeing this documentary about a guy who had a persistent hiccup, and he figured out that as long as he is holding a cup full of some liquid he will not be hiccuping. Apparently the brain prioritises not spilling the liquid over hiccuping...

during this entire video, that body hasn't hiccuped even ONCE
I think we found a cure

Ok, blown away. I learned a ton, thank you for spending the time to make this.

Whenever I get the first hiccup I stop (talking, drinking, chewing, whatever), concentrate on my breath, and just breathe deeply for about 10 seconds. This works almost every time.
This anatomical explanation makes perfect sense to me in that context. It's literally forcing the cycle back on track.
69 years of hiccups sounds worse than burning alive.

I always had pretty painful hiccups, and I've gone through so many of those myths and the only one that reliably worked was a jump scare but hard to do when you're expecting it!
Found a long time ago if you take a long measured inhale to fill your lungs and slowly exhale it always goes away every time, works immediately before the next hiccup comes. Haven't hiccuped more than once in over 15 years thanks to this!
Maybe like he said there's a mixup of signals between your breathing rhythm and diaphragm and that slow inhale helps to balance the timing again

I find anything that distracts you or completely occupies your brain cures them, like holding your breath and fighting for air, or being frightened suddenly, or anything else that completely takes your mind somewhere else.

I don’t want him to accidentally touch his face when he’s demonstrating with his hands 🙌🏽

I learned his from my mom and it NEVER in my 60 years failed me: usually muscle spasms are treated by relieving any pressure on the muscle and massaging the affected area. To relieve pressure off your diaphragm lift your left arm above your head. This elevates the heart and lung enough for the treatment. At the same time, drink nine small gulps of water: the movement of your esophagus will act as a massage to the diaphragm. Slowly lower your arm while taking slow and deliberate breaths. As I said, this exercise never failed me or anyone I suggested it to.

I’ve learned more from watching this man and his corpse, than from staring at my biology book.

The human body is amazing. We take simple things like breathing, walking, talking, etc. for granted. Meanwhile there are some many things happening inside of us to make this all happen.

I am so glad I stumbled on these videos. 😊

This video caught my attention because my daughter suffers from frequent painful hiccups. So I am sending it to her. She had hiccups in the womb as I could feel them. ☺️
What is beyond bizarre is as I finished watching the video I notice the episode of Bewitched I am watching on TV right now is about Darren having the hiccups!! Coincidence!

In India, hiccups mean -“someone is thinking of you, right when you get them”
