I knew that. Which is why to avoid making portals too large. Cause more portal blocks means more piggies, that i need to watch out not to accidentally hit

Back in beta I'd worry about ghasts coming through.
At some point while building a farm that uses portals, I realized the nether isn't loaded and there were a ton of them spawning

Yep! This is how gold farms work. Massive portals means more chance of spawning pigs means more gold output into the system.

I think it's intended to make you think that the mobs are coming from the Nether, but actually running the Nether would be too damaging on performance

I always thought that too but I guess it actually makes more sense since the nether probably wouldn't be rendered in and/or updating

Makes sense, otherwise you'd have to keep the nether side loaded for piglins to spawn and move.

I think the idea is still that piglins come from the nether, just optimised to its simplest for the sake of performance

Oh my good now I’m sad thinking about them. Brought into a world that just completely rejects them, and they don’t even know why.
