It's like the rubber sheet analogy people always use to explain gravity - one has to image that rubber sheet facing in every direction (which ends up suggesting certain paradoxical conditions).

The best visualization i've ever seen of spacetime around a black hole was this interactive 3d model with a sphere made of hundreds of small dots. The dots were colored from red to violet to black signifying the rising intensity of warped spacetime via color. I wish I still had the link to this website.

To represent a black hole by a drawing like this youd have to be able to draw a 3d sphere with a 4d gravity well, this picture is just scaled back a dimension, its a 2d circle with a 3d gravity well.
