This week Plant Lovers its ALL about basic care and repotting of Pleione ground orchids, and in this case Pleione formosana. A beautiful and easy to grow orchid either indoors or out....as long as you get the basics right.....which I only JUST have! I have struggled with the propagation of these orchids but....I've finally figured it out!! Pleione formosana can come in a range or colours from white, like mine, to pale pinks, stronger pinks and purple. Plus there are other Pleione species so there will be one for you! I shot this video over six months so we can see the plants in bloom, the plants in leaf, and the plants in dormancy being repotted.

I love Pleiones! Before I even got interested in orchids, let alone terrestrial orchids, I bought some pseudobulbs of them, planted them in my garden in muddy-clay type mud/soil, and left them there essentially. I’m in the UK, and it’s been 5 years since I planted them and they still flower every year! I don’t know how they don’t rot away in our muddy wet winters, perhaps because they’re on an embankment, but yes they do surprise me every year!

Am I the only one that thinks the leaves are attractive? I might look at adding one of these to my collection. Thanks for the video, gives me confidence to try new things as a beginner.

Beautiful blooms these. They make me happy to see. Also, this video contains a really good explanation of the growth habit. Nice job, Matthew 👍🏼

Tonkins bulbs often have a good range of Pleione bulbs and other specialist bulbs.

Ooooh, now you’ve done it….. I’ll have to start looking for these beauties! I suppose the trick is to plant several bulbs in different stages of growth to assure you get blooms every year? Ill look forward to seeing your different colored blooms next year. Do all the blooms look the same? Love the lip on those!

I always wondered how to grow these, thank you for the info packed video. The plants in full leaf remind me of Dendrochilum glumaceum. Have a wonderful weekend.

Really useful video, thank you. I’m hoping to buy some more this winter - the mice tucked in to ALL my previous bulbs.

I have to ask, you said in another video that once they flower, the bulb dies off and then produce bulbils which go on to flower the next year. This has not been my experience as far as I’m aware, was this information correct? Thanks!
