North Indian classical flute is some of the most beautiful stuff I've heard

Thank you Narhe for these explanations. I've been trying to notate music from India and it almost broke my brain because I did not know of these embellishments.

"Being an Indian classical violinist, I find meend the easiest of the lot; the most difficult is gamak. Meend usage is generally raag-based, but I have seen violinists use it freely. Additionally, Indian classical music doesn't have a concept of rest, so maintaining the unity within a phrase is very difficult without breaking the swaras. However, with open strings on the violin, it becomes challenging. With purely Indian instruments like the sitar, where the whole melody is played on a single string, maintaining the continuity of the swaras is much more achievable."

YES!

Wyclef Jean once talked about how Whitney Houston BENT a note as part of a vocal run, during the recording of "My Love Is Your Love". That video is on Youtube. He thought Whitney went flat but she immediately shaded him in the studio and said that she was SLIDING towards the correct pitch. Wyclef was mindblown by the precision of Whitney's voice, allowing her to BEND notes.

Well, actually, that technique is not uncommon. Ancient Egyptian, Ancient Persian, and Ancient Hindu music all feature MEEND, which is a multiple grace notes embellishment applied between notes. These grace notes represent different diluted shades of the preceding and the succeeding pitch, making them sound BENT. The space between two pitches is not blank; In fact, it is comprised of an infinite number of shades, which can be accessed using WIND instruments, including the human voice.

Indian classical is so intricate and intriguing

Once I read that the Asian classic music is more focused on melody instead of harmony (more focused by European music) or rhythm (more focused by African music).

It makes sense when I listen to this.

Last week I watched "Pather Panchali" by Satyajit Ray for the first time and I fell in love with the music. Thanks for the video!

I'm mostly only familiar with western music, but I love how these soubd, especially the meend. I feel like the theory behind Indian (or any other non-western) music would be so interesting to explore because it's just so different.

Anything I've ever heard about Indian music blows my mind. The drummer Sarah Thawyer broke down a tabla (sorry if I spelled that wrong) and it really changed my perspective on counting rhythms and how melodic it can be. This is great, more please!

I love this - to my european ears - mystical and magical sound of these eastern music. I enjoyed it in maroq as well. Its also crazy how they just do acapella songs in oriental music.

In maroq we did lots of singing with just some easy clapping or drumming + an old damaged flute with our guide and team

Great to see appreciation by detailed demonstration of nuances. Most westerners just generalise and put the entire indian classical music in a separate bin.
