West Oakland grocery store's closure leaves void, concerns of food desert

At West Oakland's Community Foods Market, customers are filling their baskets for the last time. The store was the only full-size grocery store in the neighborhood for the last 40 years. Despite opening three years ago, it's closing for good on Sunday.

How can you have a functional grocery store in Oakland? While the brothers go over the bride to loot in SF, rob people, break-in cars. You have so many jobs openings out there. None of the brothers are willing to work, instead, most of them have criminal records. I can't see, how this grocery store is able to make money.

5 short blocks North there is a Pack & Save Mega-store, it was always cheaper.... 7 blocks down the road is a full providing Latin Grocery store that is cheaper then both of these.

Has anyone seen that big tent ⛺️ in front of the Safeway on Grand Ave.? It’s a home to some b grumpy homeless guy. Ppl are always giving him food and money. Krazy libs. I haven’t been there for over two weeks and don’t plan on going back.

This is why Oakland has districts that have no services at all. No grocery stores, no banks. This was an independent business and there is little they can do to stay open unless they get some help.
