I’ve been messing with virtual machines for 10 years. Surprised I started at such a young age. (I was a kid in Elementary school.) They’ve always been so fun.

Britec09 Love your channel. Learned a lot of actual useful stuff from your content.

You forgot to say that Hyper-V is not available using the Home edition of Windows 10 or 11.

@Britec09, what version of Win 11 do you have on your system? Is it the Pro, the Enterprise edition or the home? Hyper-V isn't available on the Home edition of Windows 10 and 11.

That's very handy to know. For testing it might be better to use this than messing around with VMWare

thanks for this information and for sharing ... so it`s running on Win10 Pro either, sounds good ... am I right saying that there`s no specific need for "Oracle VM VirtualBox" to test Linux on Windows PCs ?

This misses a big point, Hyper-V is only supported on Win 11 Pro or higher, home edition does not support Hyper-V.

This looks remarkably similar to Virtual Box. Is there any advantage of one over the other ? How does Hyper-V perform with copy paste, sound in and out, passing through USB and other devices etc ? Nicely made video of course :-) Thank you

I love Hyper-V, thanks to Microsoft.
Useful video Brian.

Yeah, Ok, very nice'n all that ... except when you love to use the very same virtualization software and the very same virtual machines on multiple platforms. In my case, VirtualBox. It is free (even for commercial use!), looks exactly the same on Win/Lin/OSX, and I can use the same predefined virtual machines no matter which OS (host) I'm booting up. And I can also export my VMs to other multi-platform formats as well.

Well, Brian. What software do we NOT need to install (as per the title of your video)?

Proxmox VE Debian based VM hypervisor is a very good option tu run your home lab server. :D

The title is patently false. The first thing you demonstrate is installing Hyper-V. Hyper-V is software.

Windows 11 Pro*. Home doesn't support hyper-v officially as far as I know. Important distinction to make.

Howdy.
I wonder does the Virtual Machine Operating System access hardware directly through WIn11 ?
To use tech lingo. Does the VMOS kick out WIN11 HAL layer and use its own HAL layer ? Or does the VMOS use the WIN11 HAL layer ? Or do the HAL layers get tunneled or chained somehow ?
Regards.
