Good video, with a relatable conclusion. I do enjoy how a good lume looks, but in practice they do not add much to the functionality of a watch. The rare occasion where I check my watch in the dark, the lume has usually already faded to the point where I cannot tell the time, even on watches that are known for having a good lume (Seiko). I find that in normal daily use, the lume never really has the opportunity to get fully charged as they would when shining a torch directly at them for a minute or two.

Personally i rather have lume that lasts for a while than no lume at all. If you're in the dark for more than an hour and you look at your watch, your eyes have adjusted to the darkness and you can see the lume still glowing. And i think green is still superior than blue or orange simply because green is a color that is the easiest to see by our eyes. Orange and Blue may seem cool but green just works a lot better.

The video I have been longing for. Thank you!

Maybe the most sensible lume test I’ve ever seen. I admit I’m a lume fan, and my best lumed watches will last for 6-7 hours. BUT even so - If I think about utility over a 24-hr period, or a week or a month, it’s hard to beat a non-lumed watch with clear design and great contrast. My pocket watches really “shine” in that sense.

One consideration is that the the camera settings do no mimic the way the eyes will adjust to low light over time. My Tudor is readable after 4 hours or so of in the middle of the night, with eyes adjusted.

Add a Seiko SBBN031 Tuna to the test, garatee it will win, best I have ever seen.

Good vid.
My experience is that the Breitling superocean model that is the previous version to the current 2023 is the best I’ve had. It will go all night and not fade.

Seiko divers are almost equal.
I have a panerai but a high end clone and would say is close to your one which is not great but will keep a low glow during the night,

The human eye is amazing. I have a Tudor BB58, FXD, 124060 Sub, Ti. Citizens and ALL of them are readily legible in nighttime room darkness ( 1, 2, 3, 4 a.m. easy...and even in a pitch black bathroom at 6 a.m.) after normal wear, no UV charging. Yes, the seconds hand is harder to read, but still faintly visible.

A few notes: 1) I would use visible full-spectrum light in addition to black-lights. you did not specify the emission of the UV in nanometers. Lumes have absorptive and emissions in the 420-480 nm range, and that is outside of the blacklights available commercially. Makes this test non-scientific depending on which lume is on each watch. and 2) Lume can be very important depending on the use of the watch. Either way that debate goes, it is very easy to add lume to a design. Manufacturers are generally lazy here, and it should reflect in the product cost.

Imo, I feel like I could atleast read the Tudor's hour hand at 50-55

So basically my $165 Aragon DiveMaster 4 Evo lasts longer than all of them 😂
Seriously though, I ran this test on my watches also. A 2 hour time-lapse. After an hour and ten minutes the camera could no longer see any watches. However the human eye can see it well afterwards once adjusted.

not having a seiko in there is just weird

I thought divers could charge the lume while diving with their flashlight

this does not make sense, what is the use of a lume apart from the show off, the watches are useless after 20 mintues. they cannot tell time. tritium tubes are the way to go. else just go with a casio or timex lumibrite.

The fact ya have to charge watches first what about out camping and wanna know time in middle of night

you need a seiko in these comparisons!!

Tritium tubes will always be best. Lume paint is a scam

I can guarantee even a basic Seiko Diver would blow away Rolex. ...Seiko takes Lume very seriously.
