Ohhhh my word Dawn @TheMinimalMom !!! I just emptied out HALF (maybe 60%) of my 1900 sq foot home over the last 2 days. 😳🤪 98% went into my black garbage bags and tonight... I almost cried being able to walk through 3 rooms and not trip or walk around STUFF. I'm looking forward to finishing the rest - while my body aches, my mind is so much more at ease. ❤

When my older children were younger, we used to do this thing that we called yard sale. I would go in the room and drag everything but the big furniture out throw all the laundry on the couch, and put the toys in a long line through the house. Then, after vacuuming, we would start putting things back, but the boys had to go to the “yard sale” and select the most important things to put back in the room. Once the room was where we wanted it, everything else would be boxed up and put in the storage shed, or set aside for a real yard sale/donation/give away.
It was the best way I have ever found to get young children excited about cleaning their room and decluttering toys. Haha, I guess desperation led me to a hybrid of Marie Kondo and this fabulous new approach!

I love all the pink and I love seeing you give yourself permission to buy something new. Sometimes the "minimal" content can feel like an extreme act of self-deprivation, and here you're showing its a form of self love and self respect!

I tried it this evening. The reactions have been so funny. My husband and boys were gone, and the girls in their room and I quickly emptied the living room of all decor and pillows and blankets (and stray items) My girl came out to say good night and looked at it and said, Mama, you cleaned the living room : ) I told her what I did and she said she loved it!! All clean and empty. When my husband and boys got home, my husband said, what happened? It looks like we just moved in, the homey touch is missing, but my sons felt just like my daughter - it feels so good everything clean. Please, Mama, when you put some stuff back, only a few things, not much! It was really eye opening and hilarious. : ) By the way, I do love that clean empty feeling too. Thank you, Dawn, for this evening inspiration. : )

I've been a minimalist 2015. Last year my kitchen started getting too much stuff. I took "EVERYTHING" out of the kitchen and set it on a table in a side room. Then as I needed it I would bring it back into the kitchen. I gave it a few weeks and then everything that was still on the table left the house. I really like the quite room, so peaceful.

When my son was a teenager I got tired of his room so I took everything out and laid it on the garage floor including the mattress. Over the next day and a half he moved back a quarter of it then he said I don’t want any of the rest.

My analysis without trying this:

1. Empty an entire room/space.
2. Box everything up using Amazon Boxes
3. Hide everything.
4. Wait 24 hours.
5. Spaz out since I still need to use the space but don't have the necessary tools to do what I need to do.

Post 24 hrs:
1. Put everything away that I know I'll actually use AND has a space.
2. Find cool items and tools to fill now empty space.
3. Return back to where I started.

I LOVE this idea. It is a great non-threatening way to introduce the idea of decluttering and minimizing to someone who isn't on board. It could surprise them by how relaxed they feel in a decluttered space.

I have found that decor on the table actually helps me keep it clear because I don't like the prettiness being ruined. So if I want a clean table, I have to decorate it 😊

I watched this video a few days ago and couldn't get it out of my head. I even showed it to my mom, age 82, who lives with me and my husband and daughter. My mom has been doing Swedish Death cleaning in her own room. She loved your video as well. Yesterday we took everything out of every cabinet and drawer in the kitchen. Scrubbed it all down and made some hard decisions. There were some things that were lovely but that we just don't use.

I came up with a new line. "If this had never come into my house would I miss it? If the answer is no, I got rid of it.

Thank you for this video. I feel so motivated to continue.

O.K. Here is the results of hushing the side of my fridge!! Lol! I took everything off & waited 24 hours. I was so shocked to discover how much I missed it all!! It looked so stark! Seeing those little pictures, notes, & quotes everyday meant more to me than I ever knew! I am a minimalist but I will be keeping these treasures on my fridge!! This was a great lesson :) Thanx Dawn!

I accidentally hushed my house last week when I got new flooring. I paid extra to have the installers move the furniture, but I cleared all surfaces and emptied closets and stacked everything in the laundry room. It was so much easier to get rid of stuff afterward (but not easy to do laundry) and I realized how much extra we had when I was slowing reincorporating our belongings. I’ve been so much happier in the space. Now I need to hush the garage by taking care of all these donations! Maybe my garage will be quiet enough to fit my car!!

I think the dining room table looks lovely with the decor. It’s very simple.

Did anyone else wonder how those darling white tulips lived to see the day of being displayed without being declutterred by Dawn in the past few years?!? Great video!

I’ve made a decision! I love Dawn and have been watching her for a couple of years, but I’m not even going to try to be a minimalist anymore. When she finishes decluttering, there’s nothing going on, nobody’s doing anything, nothing to do but look at the clear surfaces. I like to sit among all my little projects, all going on at the same time. I plan to keep all my stuff as long as I’m here. (No Swedish Death Cleaning for me.) I’ll just make sure to leave enough money to pay for a couple of big dumpsters after I’m gone. Still luv ya, Dawn! And Cas!

My mom wanted a cake plate, but had little use for it. I told her that coffee shops keep apples, oranges, and bananas in it. Perfect solution for mom.

Yes coffee maker better there. Appliances are so hard to house! Just the pink things on ur shelves. No cloths or cake stands for a really zen vibe! Love it. Ps own kitchen is saying, hey look at me!!

I love what you did on kitchen and dining room. Just my personal opinion, I think the shelf is a little too busy. Try and take out white bowl/mug on middle shelf. Because it’s so big you loose the “whole” beauty of the plate! Just my opinion like I said. ❤

So breathable... So nice! And in addition Dawn I agree to remove the cake stands and the napkins hanging off the shelves.
