When I was a teenager, my mom threw away all my wall posters and many other valuable things while I was at school. After school, I was shocked and tears welled up in my eyes, but of course, I didn’t say anything to my mom. Now, when we declutter my kids' room, I always do it with them. Yes, it takes longer, but this way I make sure I don't throw away anything valuable.

I had to clear out my living room because we were getting new flooring. What struck me as fascinating were the number of things that had been there for years and I simply just didn't see them anymore. When I started to bring stuff back it was such a joy to reduce what I put back into the room.

I love that this is someone's concept of a small room! These bedrooms are generously sized, they just have a double bed in them. In the UK, and I'm sure other places too, most children have single beds, and it's common for the smallest bedroom known as the box room, to have room for a single bed and bedside table. No one's hard done by, it's just the norm. Our spare room/office I'm working in today wouldn't have space for any other furniture if we put a double bed in it.

A few years ago my kids voluntarily cleaned out their bedrooms when I was watching Minimal Mom, and for the most part, they've kept it that way for about 3-4 years. They really like that it's less cluttered. The only thing they haven't done is routinely go through their rooms again and figure out what they've outgrown in the past few years. Yesterday I removed some chore magnets from my 15yo's room. We've never used them, so into the trash they go.

We did a major remodel of kitchen, dining and living rooms. Everything was removed from walls, ceiling and floors. I collect fine art & heirloom items. This remodel took months. I finally pulled a chair into the livingroom for reading & watching the outside wildlife. I grew to love the lack of decor. The new paint, molding & floors is very appealing and relaxing. My brain slowed down when I was in the rooms. My husband struggled with a blank wall, I struggled putting a nail into the fresh walls. Eventually, I very selectivly, picked a picture or piece of furniture. I am not ready to get rid of my art collection. It doesn't sell well online and there is no auction house in my area. It is stored in another area and sometimes I will switch out pieces. I never want full spaces again, even if it is with beautiful original pieces. The fullness is busy for my spaces, eyes and brain.
