Y'all realize we can keep playing 5e right? We don't have to play onednd

As fun as these kind of builds are, they do also highlight problems with certain classes. Past 5th level, you’re pretty heavily incentivized to be anything other than a barbarian

It’s a more complicated attack sequence, but the aberrant mind/paladin faces the same issue. You can no longer smite/smite/quicken dissonant whispers/warcaster OA booming blade smite with the updated rules.

Of course, you don’t have to update to the new 5.5 rules. Nobody is going to force you to do it.

Hot take : the subclass feature of bear totem barbarian is so juicy that most people who play barbarian will play this subclass, preventing people from exploring other subclasses.

Solution : make the resist all damage a core feature for all barbarian and give bear totem something that helps with grapple, like a free grapple on a hit once per turn.

This way, you wont feel tempted to abuse only one subclass and can freely explore the other classes.

Good thing the "rules" aren't set in stone and a DM can choose which rules to use.

Hold up. How did i not realise Barbarian can smite whilst raging!

Don't forget your DM ripping their hair out with the sheer damage you put out and the rest of the party feeling like they can't keep up. All the smite spam builds needed a gutting (even though the smite changes ARE an overcorrection) because man is it a spotlight hog issue with combat.

They could easily keep smite as a spell and just change the concentration on other smites so that they don't require concentration and instead last til the end of your turn. Searing smite lasts for a maximum number of turns equal to the number rolled on your initial d6 of damage or ends if they save. Same with wrathful. Make it explicit that the same smite can't stack effects, so you essentally get a tiny damage boost but 2 times to proc with extra attack. This makes the other smites way more useful at low levels. Divine smite is still your go to straight damage tho.

A more complicated but fun solution would be to give a paladin the ability to sub out a use of a level 2 divine smite to cast their channel divinity if takes a bonus action. Make the paladin a more offensive tank support than dps.

Dont forget you can drop a couple levels in hexblade to add some fun charisma based dmg to melee weapons

I think most people are gonna continue with 5e and only take bits from 5.5 based on how much people have been complaining about it being one step forward and twenty seven steps back

i went Berserker for this same build, it's insane the damage you pump out

There are definitely things I like about 5e that I think One DnD fucks up, however, there are also things about OneDnD that I think improves on 5e

I don't know about you guys, but I'm fully intent on utilising the best of both worlds

I have a feeling that paladin smite and hunters mark (and any other class specific 'spell') is going to get 'immunity' to the 'no casting spells while raging' wording, and this is why I don't understand why they made class abilities spells instead of class abilities like Second Wind

Excellent! Please make sure these types of changes are detailed. These are the hard to catch changes that need to be explained.

I have a good form to use that build in the new books, talk with your dm and tell him that you want your smite to function like a feature but you can only cast it one per turn, and that's it

As a DM I love it… but I will also find a way to tear the build to shreds

Smite should have been a use of their Channel Divinity. More thematic and closer to what a Paladin’s Smite is

They’re also dropping all -5 +10 mechanics.

I went warlock barbarian bard for my smite build. Mostly for flavor and depth of options. Definitely not as strong especially since BEAR vs ancestral. But I can actually pull agro at high levels, but I definitely wished I had bear resistance in those tests.
